Yes, but what we have is nuclear overkill.

What we have is largely being maintained due to the fact that we still haven't found a chemical compound capable of breaking down the radioactive particles yet. One day in the future we will either have the space technology to safely dump it off planet or we will have the necessary compounds and machinery capable of recycling nuclear materials.

Obviously we need to reduce the size of the overall DOD, beginning with closing overseas bases and operations.
