1) The flat tax amounts should be adjusted annually for inflation/deflation
2) The national sales tax is the dumbest most regressive tax there is.
Inflation should not change the percentage of your pay which goes to funding your government. Does inflation change the percentage of your paycheck that goes to paying rent/mortgage, or food? What you are saying makes no sense whatsoever. Theoretically, your idea could eventually result in a 100% tax rate. We should establish what portion of our pay we want to devote to funding government, whether that is 1/4, 1/5, or 1/3... and that rate should apply across the board, with the exception of the elderly and poor, of course.
There is no reasonable basis (or fairness) in a tax system which rates are determined on the level of one's success. You should have to pay 1/5 of your income to fund the government just like me, and the actual amount of money we pay, is based on how much we made. THAT IS FAIR!
Look... when you go out to eat at a nice restaurant and order steak... is your bill determined based on how much money you make? Do they say, well.. SF here makes $100k a year, so his steak costs $50, but Dixie only makes $40k so his steak is only $20? No, our steak costs the same amount, it doesn't matter which of us makes more money. If you go on vacation at a five-star resort, does the price you pay, depend on how much you make? Do they say, well... this guy makes more money, so he can afford to pay a higher rate? And oh... here's someone who is below average income, they only pay a fraction of what the rich guy paid! No, the rate for the five-star is the same, regardless of how much you make, they don't even ask or care how much you made! Why is this common sense suddenly discarded when it comes to paying our taxes?
A national sales tax would not be dumb or regressive, that is
YOUR OPINION, not a
FACT! It's especially not regressive if implemented the way it was proposed under the Fair Tax plan, because everyone got a prebate check for the amount of tax paid on basic needs. The less you spend, the less tax you pay... people who barely spent enough for basic needs (whether frugal or poor) would pay virtually no tax. In a consumer-driven economy, a consumption tax is the best and most fair way to go.... and the SMARTEST.
