The US is backtracking a bit because too many Americans and friendlies were caught by the collapse of the Afghan government.

If the Taliban become the "official government", with Russian backing, then there is zero reason to stay except to pull our people out and take what is ours back home.

I have no doubt whatsoever that had the withdrawal happened a year ago, it would have been exactly as chaotic, if not more so. After all #TRE45ON is "smarter than all the generals." From what we saw of his non-handling of the pandemic, as well as the failed vaccine rollout, there's no doubt that it would have been an even bigger clusterfuck.
