Sweden follows Finland in NATO membership application

Sweden's ruling Social Democrats announced Sunday that they will support an application to join NATO, paving the way for the Scandinavian country to submit a joint bid with its strategic ally and neighbor Finland.

Why it matters: Sweden's possible reversal of more than 200 years of military non-alignment is the latest historic shift in Europe precipitated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The big picture: The announcement by Sweden's Social Democrats comes days after the leaders of Finland, which shares an 800-mile border with Russia, called for their country to apply for NATO membership "without delay."

There was zero chance that Ukraine was joining NATO any time soon. They were far away from joining the EU, but coming closer. If Putin had just done nothing, he would be in much better shape right now.

Trump thought Vlad was a genuis.

Vlad made NATO substantially stronger, and gave NATO a good look at how weak and inept the previously vaunted Russian army really is.

Prior to February 24, Biden, Macron, and Scholz were going out of their way to talk to Putin, meet with him, and listen to his concerns.

Putin should have stayed on the path of diplomacy and engagement.

But obviously Vlad was planning to invade all along, and this had been planned for a long time.

Not only did Putin do the worst moves he could, Biden played his side perfectly. Anyone who is willing to look at the real trump, is disgusted by him.

There is no way that Ukraine being invaded was going to turn out well, but this is the best it could turn out.

Biden had the right instinct - Russian imperialist fascism cannot be allowed prevail over a fledgling democracy. We cannot allow aggressors to flaunt the hard-won post-WW2 paradigm of international law, without making aggressors pay a painful price.

Trump had all the wrong instincts. His first instinct was to blurt out that Vlad's war of aggression was pure genuis.

I am amazed how much solidarity Biden was able to get out of the Europeans, and how little the Republicans have offered. Both are eye opening.

I suppose that it's difficult to look for solidarity against a common foe when you side with the foe.

I am glad the establishment Republicans are keen to defend Ukrainian democracy. Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins, John Cornyn were in Kiev yesterday pledging America's steadfast support.

It's the MAGA contingent we have to worry about allying themselves with the Kremlin.

The Republican Party is trying to decide if they fear the MAGA 20% who love Putin, or the 80% of Americans who think of Putin as an enemy.

They remind me of someone who has decided that venomous snakes are simply misunderstood. "Here, pet him, he's a nice cobra."

There is a line, and many Republicans are close to that line. Some have actually crossed that line. It is just reality.
