You make it personal when you support those of us that prepared for our kid's education funding college for kids whose parents didn't plan with our personal money.

I'm on a far higher level than you. I support and practice personal responsibility. You support irresponsible parents getting for their kids what they refuse to, and should pay for, themselves. That, not only, makes me a better person, it makes me a better parent. I didn't pass on the irresponsible mindset you clearly passed on to your children.

A lot of the degrees you might subjectively judge as useless serve as the first step to higher educational attainment. For instance, lit majors parlay that undergrad degree into Master's programs or Law School, and parlay those degrees into jobs or even higher degrees like PHD's.

The more educated you are, the lower the unemployment rate and higher demand.

Lots of large corporations also look for students with degrees in things like social work, women's history, and other non-STEM degrees because those corporations know and understand that it takes broad and diverse perspectives to reach consumers in a global market.

My reward is knowing that I fulfilled my responsibility to my kids. Knowing that those parents have kids that didn't get what mine did because they failed their kids is a bonus.

Agree. Many kids just take a 4 year vacation from the real world. Others acquire an otherwise useful degree, but end up being one in a stack of 100 applications for a job in their field.

In either case, if you borrowed the money, you pay it back. Sadly, a degree cannot be repossessed.

The proposed bill actually makes it possible to not pay anything.

There are various programs already that forgive student debt. They usually revolve around working as a teacher/doctor in a depressed area for a certain number of years.

Someone brought up the example of "basket weaving", but that was never a major at either of the two Universities I attended. It was probably an elective, sure, but wouldn't basket weaving technically be a "trade"? They probably offer it as a major in trade schools.
