Strong Alaskan Unions

I'm a non-union public employee and I get along just fine. I get cadillac medical insurance and I contribute nothing, a generous 403b plan, 3 weeks vacation (next year it goes up to 4 weeks), 6% raise every year, and many other benefits/perks. Sorry, but I don't see why public unions are necessary.

Public unions are one of the last bastions of unionhood. At this point, it may be more symbolic than anything, like the murals issue in Maine, but then it may not be so symbolic after all. Try to think how well benefitted you would be (or perhaps just workers in general) had there never been unions.

Unions are dying off because they're incompatible with the 21st century economy in the United States. They served their purpose during industrialization, but in a services-based economy, they are obsolete. Even Bfgrn finally admitted that he makes a good living in a non-union job (I had to ask him at least 10 times, though).

Some people have a really hard time letting go...

So, it doesn't matter where they are or what they're doing so long as they're unions? Doesn't sound like the point of unionism to me...

in most places, public employees make far more than their private counter parts....there are also LAWS that deal with public employees benefits etc...they don't need unions

Unions still have their place, workers threatened to unionize to get better wages. Unions set the standards, the private non unions follow or lose workers.

The North Slope threatened to unionize, it made BP and Conoco sit up and take notice!

So you are wrong young one, they still have their place and if your look at the disasters called mining, you would know this.

When the extremist teabaggers get their way, and you are unprotected by a union, you will be the among the first to loose your cushy public employee job. Update your resume you're gonna need it soon.

There's a reason our private workforce is only 7% unionized. Most new jobs being in service and tech industries. Young kids today want to talk about stock options not unionization.

Hey genius, did you read my post? I am already "unprotected by a union" and doing just fine, that was my point. Now kindly GFY.

Well, isn't that nice, I am glad you all have it so good! Thank the unions...

Rana, that's the point these knuckleheads don't understand. His wages, rights, benefits and time off were all issues unions fought for and won. He owes his middle class status and working conditions to the same labor unions he hates.

As I stated, unions served their purpose. But in our primarily services-based economy, they have become obsolete.

Sorry Crashk, but your delusional rants amount to nothing more than kooky conspiracy theories with no basis in reality.

At 38 I'm not a young kid. And how did union workers create the tech industry for instance? The tech industry has never been unionized. Unions never offered stock options to my knowledge.

Precisely... dinosaurs such as Crashk don't seem to grasp that.

Even in manufacturing they have become not just obsolete, but counter productive to everyone involved except the fat cat union bosses! With federal state and local regulations that govern employee protections-unions are not necessary. They do act like thugs for their members never concerning themselves with anything but demands....When a company finally has enough they leave---then unions point the finger of blame at the company for leaving. Local economies suffer the loss of jobs; states the loss of revenue-ergo
