Stossel's Affirmative Action Bake Sale!

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXKIquyUcr4"]YouTube - Stossel Sells Affirmative Action-Priced Cupcakes[/ame]

Sometimes Stossel gets on my nerves, but this was rather clever. He set up a "bake sale" at a Manhattan mall, offering his cupcakes at prices based on race.

Asians $1.50
Whites $1.00
Black/Hispanics $ .50

Not surprisingly, people were appalled and offended.... said he was out of his mind... needed to be closed down! He explains to one woman, he is only trying to make amends for all the years of oppression to blacks, and Asians have to pay more because they are more affluent, according to SAT scores. "That's stereotyping!" said the lady... to which Stossel just gives her that deadpan Stossel look. Priceless!

His point, was to illustrate the absurdity of academic affirmative action programs, which essentially work the same way. I don't think ANYONE caught that. It's really Classic Stossel!

Let's take the concept of Affirmative action and apply it to the last 2 presidents, and the 2008 election.

The aversion to Affirmative action is that someone gets something they haven't earned or achieved because they were afforded a special privilege.

Barack and Michelle Obama came from middle class families. They worked hard in school, earned good grades that afforded them entry to prestigious colleges. They took out school loans to pay for their education. Those loans were only recently paid off.

George W. Bush was the grandson of a Wall Street executive banker, and a United States Senator and the son of a man who became a millionaire when George W. was in his teens.

Almost every business venture George W. was involved in ended like his Arbusto Energy which folded. Bush had multiple episodes of alcohol abuse and never answered questions about past alleged illicit drug use.

Like many sons born to privilege, at each failure, George W. fell UP, never down.

John Sidney McCain III McCain's father and grandfather were both four-star admirals. John entered the U.S. Naval Academy.

At the Academy, aside being known as a “rowdy, raunchy, underachiever” who resented authority, Cadet McCain became infamous as a leader among his fellow midshipmen for organizing “off-Yard activities” and hard drinking parties.

McCain’s grades were “marginal.” He drew so many demerits for breaking curfew and other discipline issues that he graduated fifth from the bottom of the class of 1958. Despite his low “class standing,” and no doubt because of the influence of his family of famous Admirals, McCain was leap-frogged ahead of more qualified applicants and granted a coveted slot to be trained as a navy pilot.

He spent the next two and a half years as a “naval aviator in training” at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas, flying A-1 Skyraiders.

McCain, the “below par” pilot, eventually lost 5 military aircraft, the first during a training flight in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while trying to land. The Navy ignored the crash and graduated McCain in 1960.

Again, a son born to privilege, at each failure, John Sidney fell UP, never down.

So it would seem to me that the only non Affirmative action president or candidate in the black president.

Wow, no response, why am I NOT surprised. Don't forget, George W. Bush did not have the grades nor the test scores to get into Yale, but as his forefathers had graduated from Yale, he got in as a legacy, which is nothing more than privileged white affirmative action.

Because it was stupid. Only a pinhead like you would consider Stossel's bake sale experiment to correlate to the issues AA addresses.

It's exactly the way colleges all across America apply AA on admissions. Asians must score higher on their SATs than others, while blacks and Hispanics can score much lower, and still be accepted.

AA doesn't "address" any issue, except the issue of fostering RACISM in America. It's a throwback from a day and time when we needed to take "affirmative" steps to attribute for systemic institutionalized racial discrimination, integrated into our own government. But that was 50 years ago, we've moved beyond those days. Colleges and universities no longer want to discourage diversity, instead, they welcome it.

Stossel nailed it, but what was amazing was the response of the passersby in the mall, shocked and outraged at such a thing... but it's the exact same thing every college in America does!

Cupcakes aren't people and college admissions ain't a bake sale.

I hope this helps.

The cupcakes didn't represent people, and the bake sale didn't represent college admissions. Perhaps this is the problem, you fail to understand the most basic and fundamental points of the illustration? You see, the cupcakes were representing education, and people still represented people. The price of the cupcakes represented SAT scores required by the various races of people, to acquire the cupcake (education), which is exactly how current Affirmative Action laws are practiced in every public university.

But thanks for helping, I always need help understanding how the addled minds of pinheads work!
