GILROY GUNMAN CITED WHITE SUPREMACIST MANIFESTO ON INSTAGRAM JUST BEFORE SHOOTING

BY JESSICA KWONG ON 7/29/19 AT 1:04 PM EDT

A gunman who killed three people at the Gilroy Garlic Festival on Sunday evening posted about a white supremacist book on Instagram before firing into the crowd, according to screenshots of an account that has since been taken down.

The gunman, identified by police as 19-year-old Santino William Legan, injured 15 people and killed three others, including a 6-year-old boy being he was shot and killed by Gilroy police. In the aftermath, screenshots began circulating on social media of the Instagram account @santino_williamlegan, which has been removed by Instagram.

Writer and actress Amanda Duarte tweeted a screenshot of a post apparently by Legan of Smokey Bear and promoting a white supremacist book from 1980.

"His Instagram was just taken down, but before it was, I saw a post from the festival right before the shooting that said 'Read Might Is Right by Ragnar Redbeard,' which is a misogynist white power manifesto," Durate tweeted in part.

"I'm not saying the shooting was racially motivated — I think this guy just hated everyone," Duarte also tweeted. "But this is a fact worth knowing."
Another screenshot of the account shows a photo of the festival and a caption by @santino_williamlegan stating, "Ayyy garlic festival time. Come get wasted on overpriced shit."

Might Is Right or The Survival of the Fittest pushed Social Darwinism and was described by revisionist historian James Martin as "surely one of the most incendiary works ever to be published anywhere."

Besides advocating for the book which claims the Anglo-Saxon race is superior and that women are the property of men, @santino_williamlegan wrote: "Why overcrowd towns and pave more open space to make room for hordes of mestizos and Silicon Valley white twats?"

The Gilroy Garlic Fest Shooter Plugged a White Power Manifesto on Instagram

‘Might Is Right’ book dates from the late 1890s, but it’s become a staple in the white supremacist canon

Police officers carry evidence bags from the family home of Gilroy Garlic Festival suspected gunman Santino William Legan, Monday, July, 29, 2019, in Gilroy, Calif. Noah Berger/AP

On Sunday afternoon, a gunman opened fire at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, an annual summer festival in the quiet city of Gilroy, California, located about 30 miles south of San Jose. The gunman killed three people, including a six-year-old boy, and injured at least 12 others. Police said the gunman had been shot and killed and that authorities suspected he may have had an accomplice, who was still at large.

Although authorities initially did not reveal the identity of the shooter, local news station KPIX 5 reported he was a 19-year-old man named Santino Legan. Police recovered a backpack filled with ammunition at the scene, and they later searched his home and a second location.

Is There a Political Reason Twitter Won't Do More to Combat White Supremacy?

Little is currently known about Legan: Though witnesses claim to have heard him say he was “really angry” while he was opening fire on the crowd, there’s not much indication as to his potential motive for the shooting. While his social media platforms appear to have been deleted as of Monday morning, one post on his alleged Instagram read: “Ayyy garlic festival time. Come get wasted on overpriced shit.” Another post on the now-deleted Instagram included a picture of a Smokey the Bear sign advocating for forest fire prevention, with Legan writing in the caption: “Why overcrowd towns and pave more open space to cater to make room for hordes of mestizos and Silicon Valley white twats?” then plugging the text Might Is Right by Ragnar Redbeard.

A 19th-century text of unknown authorship (its origins have been attributed to everyone from British author Arthur Desmond to Call of the Wild novelist Jack London), Might Is Right has long been considered a key text in the white supremacist movement, says Keegan Hankes, a senior analyst for the Southern Poverty Law Center’s intelligence project. “It’s widely popular and present among ethnocentric white nationalists of all levels, from suit-and-tie white supremacists to neo-Nazis,” Hankes tells Rolling Stone.

The text, which has been banned in multiple countries, essentially advocates for social Darwinism, or the idea that members of certain races or ethnicities are inherently better equipped for survival than others. The author argues that true egalitarianism does not and cannot exist, and that the “white race” is inherently biologically superior to other races....

Like I said. No facts. Inneundo as of right now. But hey, if Democrats have shown us all anything in the last decade or so, who needs facts?

Watch, listen to the local police chief. He held it together but his voice was certainly breaking.

Instagram Post Under Gilroy Suspect’s Name Mentioned White Supremacist Book Shortly Before Mass Shooting

A 6-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and a man in his 20s were killed when a gunman opened fire with an assault-type rifle at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in northern California on Sunday night, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said.

Santino William Legan is seen in a photo posted to a social media account.

The weapon, an AK-47-style rifle, was purchased legally by the gunman in Nevada on July 9, Smithee told reporters at a news conference Monday.
The suspect -- identified as Santino William Legan, 19 -- also injured at least 12 others before he was fatally shot by three officers who responded within a minute of the gunfire beginning, Smithee said. Legan apparently entered the annual festival, which attracts about 100,000 people every year, by cutting through a back fence and then began shooting at random, the chief said.

Instagram posts bearing the name of the gunman mentioned a white supremacist book and showed a picture of people walking around the event shortly before the shooting began.

Smithee credited a heavy police presence for saving lives as chaos descended on the decades-old festival in Gilroy, a city about 30 miles south of San
Jose.

"I think it's very, very fortunate that they were able to engage him as quickly as they did," he said...

What part of this don't you get ya white trash piece of shit??

"Read Might is Right by Ragnar Redbeard," the caption said. "Why overcrowd towns and pave more open space to make room for hordes of mestizos and Silicon Valley white tw**s?"

A "mestizo" is a person of mixed descent, usually white and Hispanic, or white and American Indian. "Might is Right" is a book published in the late 1800s which has been described as a white supremacist text that promotes anarchy, vilifies Christianity and calls Jesus the "true Prince of Evil." The natural order, according to the book, is a world at war in which the strong must vanquish the weak, and white men must rule over those of color.
