CNN) -- On Monday, House Republican leaders put out a list of what they call wasteful provisions in the Senate version of the nearly $900 billion stimulus bill that is being debated:

• $2 billion earmark to re-start FutureGen, a near-zero emissions coal power plant in Illinois that the Department of Energy defunded last year because it said the project was inefficient.

• A $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion picture film.

• $650 million for the digital television converter box coupon program.

• $88 million for the Coast Guard to design a new polar icebreaker (arctic ship).

• $448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.

• $248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.

• $600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees.

• $400 million for the Centers for Disease Control to screen and prevent STD's.

• $1.4 billion for rural waste disposal programs.

They keep calling this "porkulus". What did they expect?

It's a stimulus bill, based on the economic theory that you pump money into a bad economy to spark it. That's what it does. Therefore, it is going to SPEND MONEY, and all of that money will be spent in some congressional district or another, so - by its very definition - it is pork.

I must be missing something here. Pretty much every one of those projects listed involves some sort of product, or construction, or consumer goods, or something that requires labor & jobs.
 
I spelled the title wrong! Damo can you fix it? I am on the phone, trying to answer Tiana's email, and posting for her at the same time. I mean, really.

You're missing that the Republican party of today is evil. That's why trying to play "bipartisan" with them equals unilateral disarmament.

I wonder if they donated $246 million to Democrat campaigns across the nation?

Here are the ones that I would oppose. Not sure about necessity of the arctic ship as I haven't read/heard anything about why they feel it is needed. But I see no reason for the other three for sure.

It's supposed to be helpful in our Cold War (pardon the pun) with Russia and to a lesser extent Canada in the Arctic north. The region is supposedly rich in natural resources and will become a valuable source of materials.
