Professor Stephen Hawking has slammed President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord and said it could lead to a "tipping point" that "turns Earth into Venus".

Speaking to the BBC to mark his 75th birthday the author of a A Brief History of Time said: "We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible.

"Trump's action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of two hundred and fifty degrees, and raining sulphuric acid."

He added: "Climate change is one of the great dangers we face and it's one we can prevent if we act now.

Venus has a runaway greenhouse effect causing it to reach such a high temperature that lead would melt on its surface.

Professor Hawking said humans may ultimately have to leave Earth.

He told the BBC: "I fear evolution has inbuilt greed and aggression to the human genome. There is no sign of conflict lessening, and the development of militarised technology and weapons of mass destruction could make that disastrous.

"The best hope for the survival of the human race might be independent colonies in space."

why would anyone listen to a person which would imply that a single man, a simple man of leisure and industry would possess the ability to alter the course of nature ? no man is a god and no powerful governmental entity such as the us gov or the un is capable of swaying the cycles of nature. the "leaders' an falsely so called "scientists" which promote the idea of man legislating weather is INSANE. hawking may be good with figures. he is a fool.

Is there anything preventing you from setting your own target without being part of the paris agreement?

For instance California and New York are not part of the agreement yet they set their own targets.

Germany India China US. 3 of these countries want to be in the agreement and have increased their emissions last year. The one that doesnt want to be in Paris has decreased their emissions.

Do you have a cite for this? Because if true, that is a huge point.
 
The article you mention says agricultural yields in the US will fall. We just have to test one farm producing at a normal rate in the US year per year to see if there are any changes

Stephen Hawking says that US President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement could lead to irreversible climate change.

Prof Hawking said the action could put Earth onto a path that turns it into a hothouse planet like Venus.

He also feared aggression was “inbuilt” in humans and that our best hope of survival was to live on other planets.

In its Fifth Assessment Report, the IPCC authors wrote: “The precise levels of climate change sufficient to trigger tipping points (thresholds for abrupt and irreversible change) remain uncertain, but the risk associated with crossing multiple tipping points in the Earth system or in interlinked human and natural systems increases with rising temperature.”

“We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump’s action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of two hundred and fifty degrees, and raining sulphuric acid,” he told BBC News.

“Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it’s one we can prevent if we act now. By denying the evidence for climate change, and pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, Donald Trump will cause avoidable environmental damage to our beautiful planet, endangering the natural world, for us and our children.”

There is so much wrong with Stephen Hawking’s statement, its difficult to know where to begin.

For starters, the US “commitment” to the Paris Agreement was never going to significantly reduce global CO2 emissions. China, whose emissions already dwarf the USA, demonstrated how they think the Paris Agreement is a joke, when they announced a colossal 20% increase in coal capacity in the next 3 years November last year. Green efforts to cast China as an environmental champion just add to the humour.

In addition to China’s heroic effort to emit plant fertiliser, as WUWT recently reported, 1600 new coal plants are currently under construction around the world..

Hawking’s suggestion that the USA could somehow lead others into economic hardship by destroying the domestic US economy is and always was a liberal fantasy.

As for Hawking’s claim we could end up like Venus, a statement without evidence, even from someone with Stephen Hawking’s reputation or from the IPCC, is no more valid than a prognostication provided by a psychic gazing into a crystal ball.

The Earth has experienced far higher CO2 levels than the present day. CO2 levels in the Cretaceous, the age of the Dinosaurs, were 1700ppm – more than 4x today’s level. The Earth has experienced extreme warming and extreme cooling, but has never experienced a runaway greenhouse effect which made it totally uninhabitable like Venus.

Gigantic CO2 belching volcanic eruptions which lasted for 1000s, maybe millions of years, huge meteor strikes, the advance and retreat of giant ice sheets – for billions of years since life began, nothing in our violent geological history has managed to shift temperatures outside a range where life is possible somewhere on our planet.

Nothing we have done or are likely to do to our planet can come close to what nature has already done – to what our planet has already endured.

In a few centuries fossil fuel resources will likely be exhausted. At most we shall add a few hundred more PPM CO2 to our atmosphere. Suggesting that our mild contribution to global greening is somehow worse than all the awful geological events of our planet’s history is pure and simple fiction.

One place to start is the dude has some issues or he wouldn't make such an outlandish claim. It's the kind of global warming hyperbole that would make Al Gore blush.

Venus lol? But he's Hawking so he can get away with it; the lemmings will lap it up, and if the High Priest Hawking gives a date for the catastrophe, it will join a long line of other missed prophecies uttered by the warmongers.

It really is like a religion on several levels.

Hard to say.

But it's hard to imagine an astrophysicist not knowing that Venus is dominated by volcanism. Maybe if the earth were to sprout as many volcanoes as Venus [one or two good sized volcanoes can even outdo Trump's climate effect lol] the earths climate could become Venetian.

Hawking has to know this. The poor guy's illness may be affecting his brain. But who knows, maybe he just has an agenda.

The proximity of Venus to the sun eventually led to the breakdown of its oceans and the escape of hydrogen from the atmosphere, with the oxygen left behind bonding with carbon to create a largely CO2 based atmosphere. Volcanoes spewing copious amounts of sulphur have created a thick toxic fog of sulphuric acid, not a pleasant place.

I think the proximity to the sun also causes tidal forces in the planets interior that produces the volcanoes. Earth is in the happy zone.

I guess Hawkins forgot that we all live on the same planet and he should pay more attention to China and India. We have enough regulations, they do not. Which is, afaik, the main reason we pulled out.
