How is Trump doing?

Here's my summary having a bit of time to reflect on Trump's speech. The actual SOTU speech lasted maybe 15 minutes with Trump concluding that the SOTU was strong. What followed that was Trump, and I have to say rather masterfully, playing the room with a series of carefully crafted set pieces, little skits if you will. These were designed to endear the public and make Democrats look like callous, heartless, fools.

More often than not, he succeeded too. Several times, Trump pointed out, directly, that Democrats weren't standing or applauding for something. It was pure reality TV showmanship and the Democrats swallowed the bait whole.

Their scripted responses were lame political hackery. The speech the new Democrat governor of Virginia--a terrible choice as she has poor stage presence and isn't a particularly good speaker--made was a boring political hit piece whining about how evil Trump is.

Say what you will about Trump's motives and political moves, he played the audience last night masterfully.

That is not how presidents act. This was a show for the right. He did nothing to grow his base and plenty to drive people away. He is the Don Rickles of politics without a sense of humor.

One thing to remember about Trump: he is popular more in a congressional district that is GOP than is the congress critter who is GOP. The critter will not buck Trump for anything at all.

Make this election about Trump only. Go after him 100% and then some. The critter can be beaten that way.

Wrong! This is exactly how savvy politicians act. A good politician plays the room. The Democrats fell for it hook, line, and sinker. You could see it on their faces when the camera zoomed in on them. They were in a position where they either had to stand an applaud Trump for one of his, I'll call them, shoutouts or sit there stonefaced in protest of Trump and look like complete assholes.

For example, he brought up fraud and made enough innuendo in doing so directed at Ilhan Omar. He pushed her buttons and she stupidly made a complete ass and fool of herself in return. He played her like a cheap fiddle and she fell for it.

Jefferies the House minority leader, looked like he'd just eaten a large bug. His expression was one of total indignation. He had to sit there and take it, or he had to get up and applaud and that would make him look like he supported Trump. It was masterful. Either way, he lost and he knew it.

It was a show about making the Democrats look like shit, and Trump succeeded in spades doing that.

The Democrats didn't do themselves any favors with stupidity like the US and Ukraine flag pins. Totally inappropriate for the occasion. Or the little "Release the files" badges. Al Greene made an utter fool of himself with that little sign and then his confrontational attitude that got him removed from the room.
