AP reporter Matt Lee hounded State Department spokesman Ned Price for rejecting an Amnesty International report accusing Israel of practicing “apartheid” and “oppression” against the Palestinian people. Critics have accused the US of trying to “have it both ways,” by supporting Amnesty’s claims of abuse, but only against countries the US has “significant policy differences” with.

Published on Tuesday, Amnesty’s report explicitly describes Israel’s policies toward Palestinians – which involve forced evictions, unlawful killings, and severe restrictions on movement and freedom – as “an institutionalized regime of oppression and domination of the Palestinian population for the benefit of Jewish Israelis–a system of apartheid.”

The idea that apartheid is only apartheid when the US says it's apartheid is nuts. This particular case is another instance of how blind support for Israeli fascism- and that's what it is- has diminished America's moral substance .

The UK once condemned Nelson Mandela- the world's foremost opponent of apartheid- as a ' terrorist ' for fighting for the human rights of indigenous Africans. Today there's a bronze statue of him in London. The UK was on the wrong side of history then and the US is on the wrong side today- and in the future unless it changes course.

Israel IS an apartheid state- and proud of it.

Washington, DC – In an era of hyper-partisanship in the United States, a new bipartisan consensus appeared to emerge on Capitol Hill this week: condemning Amnesty International over its report accusing Israel of committing the crime of apartheid against Palestinians.

Dozens of US lawmakers from both major parties, including powerful legislators and heads of key committees in the House of Representatives and Senate, have released statements rejecting Amnesty’s findings – with some accusing the group of fuelling antisemitism.
These forceful condemnations, analysts say, illustrate the level of support Israel enjoys in Washington despite mounting allegations of abuse – but they do not reduce the validity of the rights group’s report.

“They want to nip this in the bud, but the bud has already broken ground and undeveloped roots, and it’s going to be a losing battle on their part,” said James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute (AAI), a Washington-based think tank.

The International Jewish Collective for Justice in Palestine, which represents Jewish organizations from fifteen countries around the globe, views the recent report by Amnesty International on Israel's system of apartheid as a a serious wake-up call to the world.
The Amnesty report is the result of years of painstaking investigation showing decisively that the Israeli government has privileged Jewish Israelis in every sphere of life over Palestinian citizens and residents in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Joining other human rights organizations like Human Rights Watch and the Israeli human rights organization, B'tselem, the report echoes what Palestinians have been saying for decades in every forum they can find: that the outrageous violations of the human rights of Palestinians must stop.
The Amnesty report, as well as other critical reports on Israel’s apartheid system, can best be understood within a context of the broader Palestinian-led movement for justice against settler colonialism that began before and during Israel's creation in 1948. At that time, the Zionist movement and then Israel expelled over 750,000 Palestinians from their land and homes. This is known as the Nakba, the catastrophe. The process of ethnic cleansing continues to this very day.
Yet again, attacks by the Israeli government and some Jewish organizations are calling the report "antisemitic," but these critics should be pressed to provide evidence supporting their claims. This will not be possible, since the report reflects the truth. Palestinians have lived under Israel’s apartheid system for decades. As Jews, we have seen these Israeli policies in action with our own eyes and know they are in complete defiance of the long-standing Jewish tradition of social justice.
We will continue to stand firm with the Palestinian movement for freedom, justice, equality, and dignity.

Taking apartheid to new extremes

There is much liberal hand-wringing over the new Israeli government’s shock-and-awe assault on the state’s judiciary and other laws and mechanisms that safeguard democracy in the country, even if that democracy was always for Jews only.

But for those who already know that Israel’s democracy is a violent lie, and that it’s been a settler colony enterprise maintained through apartheid and military rule from the beginning, there is still plenty to be concerned about. Most obviously for Palestinians, whose removal from their homeland so they may be replaced with foreign Jewish settlers has always been the top priority for the state.

The previous government was dissolved, after all, in order to prevent the expiration of a temporary measure in place since 1967 applying Israeli civil law to Jewish settlers in the West Bank.

By calling for new elections, those emergency regulations were automatically extended, preserving the system of apartheid. And in the fifth election in the space of three years, in November Israelis elected their most openly fascist and right-wing government yet.
