You are 100% correct. Mr. Owl's mom was in a dementia care facility beginning in 2011. He was appointed her guardian so we handled all of her financial and medical care decisions. The small amount of money they had saved up was eaten by the $5,000/month nursing home cost. The financial aid person at the SNF helped us file for Medicaid on her behalf. Multiple documents were required, including proof of citizenship -- her old driver's license, birth certificate, and SSN. The first thing we had to do was sell off all her farm land. (Her tiny home-built house was exempt.) That took a few months. By the time her own funds were almost exhausted, she passed away. So she never received Medicaid assistance. Our former neighbor is now dealing with the same thing for her husband, who lives in a similar facility with blindness and dementia. His nursing home care costs $12,000/month. Most nursing home residents' bills are paid by Medicaid, and every last one of them has had to sell almost everything they own -- and use the proceeds up -- to qualify.
There is no way "illegals" are getting Medicaid.
