It isn't as if the court will change at all. Souter, although a Bush 41 appointee, is certainly no conservative Justice. Unless somebody fools Obama and turns all conservative once appointed, there will be no change in the court...

They all studied law and were lawyers. In the colonial days you studied with a lawyer ("read law") before being admitted to the bar and did not necessarily go to law school. I am not sure if there were a few who did not practice law although they were lawyers. Two justices were physicians before they took up studying law and later passed the bar and became lawyers.
