Some sick shit

IHateGovernment

Is this your homework?
I know this pales in comparison to the tragic events of late but this really bothered me because I especially can't stand violence against young children and when it is done by a parent even more so

Apparently a group of women forced one of the woman's 2 and 3 year old children to physically fight each other. This absolutely disgusts me.

To top it off none of these women will serve jail time for such a heinous crime. I think anyone doing such a thing is truly sick and at least requires some psychiatric evaluation.

Perhaps some of you will find me sexist for saying so but I am especially surprised that women did this. It is commonly said that men acting in concert increases the liklihood of poor behavior but with women being in a group makes good behavior more likely.

This obviously doesn't apply here.

It is extra surprising to find that mothers would do this to toddlers. Maybe it shouldn't be though. I don't know.

It says that the children are staying with relatives, and that the relatives were shocked to find this kind of cruelty was going on. So at least there appears to be some sort of sane, safety net there for these particular children.

Parenting drives are very strong, but they're far from infallible. I'm willing to stipulate that they're probably a shade more reliable in women than in men, but only just.

I'm thinking about our primate kin a lot this morning since I made the mistake of listening to a bit of "talk radio" on the way in to work. ;) Did you know that female chimps and gorillas will sometimes simply reject a baby, refusing to care for it? In the wild, some other female will usually adopt a rejected infant, but not always.

Instinct isn't equally strong in all individuals, even among less complex creatures than humans. It's no wonder, then, that some people can't parent for shit.

But our society and religions assume that all people should be parents Ornot...
This places some in a no win situation. People that want no children are somewhat shunned in our society.

Exactly, and it's a stupid attitude. Actually, a complex of stupid attitudes.

1) Parents don't always know best. Sorry, but it's true. It becomes even more true if one insists on talking about biological parents only.

2) Not everyone should be a parent. Parenting is a skill, or a vocation requiring a set of skills.

I'm giving these ladies medals of bravery for their participation in the war on children.

LadyT, a bit presumptious, sort of like being for the war before you were against it. They are parents after all :D

The State will almost always try to give mothers a second chance. Unless there's a pattern of abuse, or neglect. In society's view, it is paramount that a child be raised, if possible, by a parent. Not in foster homes, or with distant relatives.

the article states that the children are currently living with relatives. If these mothers can get treatment and education (and supervised probation, hopefully) - and if there is no other credible evidence of a pattern of abuse - I think the State deems it in the best long term interest of the child to be raised by a parent.

Obviously, if Mommy is sitting in prison, that's not going to happen.

I'm not passing any judgements. I just think that's how the legal system works

Personally I would take the four, put them in a room and let the first one to make it out of the room serve 100 hours of community service at a shelter for abused women and children. The second one to make it out gets 400 hours, the third 3 years in jail, the fourth... 20 years.

See how friggin funny they think fighting is then.

I think relatives should be granted custody. I don't agree with the whole its better to have their parents mentality. This creates a parallel justice system that gives defendants leniency for being parents. We don't know whether the other three women were parents themselves. If any of them weren't should they have more severe punishements.

Is child abuse more punishable if you don't do it to your kids? There are few things that will fuck a kid up worse than parents who won't actually care for their children.

But then you can get charged for reasonable disclipine by a truely caring parent dealing with an unruly child.....

Is that the new liberal version of justice.....?.....do whatever you want, steal, kill, abuse, etc....the first one is free ?
