As dozens of mourners stood at a balloon-filled memorial for a 15-year-old murder victim Tuesday afternoon, a gunman opened fire on the same block and wounded a 24-year-old man — while a stunned Chicago Sun-Times reporter watched.
At about 2:20 p.m., staff reporter Kim Janssen was covering the slaying of Jovany Diaz when he heard a man shouting at the corner of Kildare and Hirsch in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood.
The man — who was among the mourners at Diaz’s memorial just moments earlier — fired two shots into the air.
Then, he pointed his handgun south on Kildare and fired two or three more shots, Janssen said.
The victim was shot in both legs and taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center...
