So tomatoes are being plowed under, and John Deere is laying off thousands of Americans

Worth noting that the job losses we are talking about are not cheap labor jobs.
Are they really job losses if there are Americans that will do the work? I could see your argument if there weren't so many unemployed American's out there.

The argument from the left is that "they are jobs Americans won't do"

How do you know? Are you saying you wouldn't do them if you really needed a job to feed yourself? You are too good for that kind of work?

Wait for it. I think that's what most Democrats and Republicans are waiting for; the consequences. They tried telling American voters what will and won't work, but that didn't have much of an affect. Plan B is to give Trump enough rope to hang himself.

Let's be honest; the average person is pretty stupid. They tend to see only what is in front of their noses. They don't consider the long-term consequences of their actions. They want immediate results and lack the patience for optimal solutions. Any politician who can tap into those weaknesses can easily milk votes out of such people.

In Trump's case, his tariffs, his greed, his power grabbing and his deluded lies will eventually be his downfall but telling people this only results in angry responses. Therefore, best to be patient. Wait for it.

There have been documented reports since at least the early 00's which indicate that most Americans will not do back breaking physical labor no matter how much pay is offered.

We are a society that has grown soft.

Farmers who grow multiple crops have been forced to only harvest the one that would fetch the highest price, while letting the other one rot because they couldn't get enough labor to harvest both. Even though they were offering twice the going wage.

Reports of newly hired American workers leaving for lunch on their first day then not returning, even to pick up their half day's pay.

This country needs immigrant labor and it's past time to accept that fact.

There are no end of Americans willing to work at John Deere. That is why the people at John Deere are being laid off. They want to work there, but cannot, because of trump tariffs.

Again with the tomatoes, the tariffs has flooded the US market early with Mexican tomatoes which make it impossible to sell American tomatoes. If farmers cannot sell their tomatoes, why pay anyone to pick them... Whether they are here legally or not.

Florida tomatoes are picked by machine, not by hand. These are skilled workers who are actually paid a respectable wage, though it still is long hours. Many are illegal aliens, but the majority are here legally. That being said, everyone is scared. ICE actually attacked a US Marshal, because he was dressed sloppy, and had darker skin. Even legal Australian farm workers are fleeing Florida, because it is getting scary there.

I could see your argument if there weren't so many unemployed American's out there.
Won't laying off thousands of Americans who work at John Deere mean higher unemployment? Won't not even picking the tomatoes lead to higher unemployment?

I am at a loss to think of any way this benefits America. Can you help explain how it does?

With the John Deere jobs, those were almost entirely Americans. Not just Americans, but the whitest Americans you will ever see.

The agriculture jobs that have been lost due to tariffs are a more mixed lot. There are many Americans, both established and not established that do the jobs. There are also legal and illegal immigrants that do the jobs. There are a large number of Australians who come up during their winter to work in the USA, and then go back to Australia during their farming season.

You are too good for that kind of work?
I get paid far more to do my job, and I am better at my job. I have no training in farming, and it does require training. So basically the same reason I am not a medical doctor. It is not my job.

Well, Rarely Right Walter, I doubt that your UberEats job pays that well, so...
You are really holding on to that UberEats thing.

I really do not know what it would be like to work for UberEats. I would not mind working out of my car, but I would be worried that the pay would not pay enough to offset the costs of the car. I do not know this to be true, but I always feel that some of the gig jobs pay less than they cost to do. I might spend 25 cents of gasoline to get 20 cents of pay.

When I was younger, I turned down tipped work with Peter Gatien, which would have paid me far more than the work I got. That was back when Gatien owned The Limelight, and Club USA in NYC back in the 1990's. I was worried that the tips were not going to be real, and would rather guaranteed pay.

Ahh,,,a boo boo, Never Right Walter...

"Tariffs" is the plural form of the word "tariff". The singular form is "tariff".

Allow me to correct your abysmal grammar..."Again with the tomatoes, the tariffs ***have*** flooded the US market..." (the asterisks are mine)

De nada.

It is no wonder that you work for Uber Eats.

You might want to work on the syntax on this post, Never Right Walter.

Seems like John Deere is laying off because of declining sales...hmmm....
If we want to blame this on illegal aliens, does that mean the illegal aliens are not buying enough tractors? Have you ever heard of an illegal alien buying a tractor? The price of a new John Deere is somewhere between $100k and a million. These illegal aliens are doing well.

John Deere is lying a lot, so I am less sure of their explanation. They were saying that it was a lie they were laying anyone off, and then they did. They are hiring like crazy in Mexico, so it does not sound like declining sales to me.

My theory is John Deere has looked at the math and figured that it is cheaper to import the tractors once into the USA, or export them to a third country from Mexico, then it is to pay high tariffs to import inputs into the USA, and then more high tariffs if they need to export it.

So John Deere is lying? You did say lying off workers...;) Well, then people are better off working for someone else... It's not the John Deere of old, is it?
