slipping mandatory service under the radar?

looks like all this torture distraction crap is working in the libs favor?

* expand and strengthen service-learning programs through year-round opportunities, including during the summer months, to improve the education of children and youth and to maximize the benefits of national and community service, in order to renew the ethic of civic responsibility and the spirit of community to children and youth throughout the United States
* Civilian Community Corps shall be called the “National Civilian Community Corps”
* the Director determines appropriate “Uniforms”
* From the Misc. section, #6104: (6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.

so we may get our own little Obama youth corps, complete with uniforms?

and I just LOVE this little passed amendment of the legislation:

H.Amdt49 Pass Amendment to prohibit organizations from attempting to influence legislation; organize or engage in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes; and assist, promote, or deter union organizing.
wonder what the penalty for exercising the 1st Amendment is going to be.

hey, does this fall under the 'no right is absolute' clause of the constitution?

I don't like the legislation even without the amendment.

I don't like Obama's obsession with youth and service, and I warned of it even before he was elected.

Where I live kids have to amass a certain number of community service hours before they can graduate from HS. It's a requirement. I see absolutely nothing wrong with a policy that works for the common good.

You would have made the perfect slave owner....I can hear you now...

"I treats my niggers with respect and only have them doing good works that benefits the whole community...theys a cleanin the streets and pickin' up roadside garbage and such....yessah, they doin' the good deeds".....

Why I do dat...cause I's a good liberal....

Need to get some work out of the lazy little bastiges. Someone has to pay for my Medicare. And playing vido games will not cut it.

Not a bit of it.

Hypothetically speaking, any slaves on my plantation would have been emancipated long before Mr. Lincoln decided to do so. They would have been free to leave, or to stay on and work for wages, thus making me an employer.

All liberals are good liberals. :p

I had to do mandatory service in high school on Saturdays to graduate and I thought it sucked (was pretty much the general consensus of the rest of the students to). I think its great when people volunteer to help out in the community (I've done volunteer work I've really enjoyed) or any other number of areas but 'forced volunteerism' (sp) by the government? F*ck that.

Perhaps your isolated little hamlet is not as evolved as the rest of the country. Many US schools require a set number of community service hours as a graduation requirement. Studies have shown that students who complete community service are more successful academically, even more so that those who do it without requirements.

Your ad hom speaks volumes, and absolutely confirms my comment about the the fringe righty reliance on fallacy rather than substance.

I'll think of it as coercion and totalitarianism, but thanks for proferring an alternative. Dumb cunt.

Perhaps you're a totalitarian cunt with shit for brains. My ad hominem is merely accurate description.

Asshat is now a righty? The world is truly upside down.

I'm sure it sucks for almost all of those who have to do it. It's the rare teenager who doesn't have any complaints about the curriculum. Can you give me specifics on how it made a negative impact on your life? After all, you just said you've done volunteer work as an adult.

My opinion is that once people reach adulthood (notice I didn't say mature), they realize the purpose behind those requirements they hated so much. I also think that service changes a person for the better, whether voluntary or required. It nudges people out of their comfort zones and helps them to appreciate their own good fortune.

We had to go pick up trash in the East Oakland projects as our "volunteer" work. The only thing it taught me was I didn't want to live in the projects when I grew up and considering my school was already in an East Oakland ghetto I had figured it out on my own.

I later in life chose to volunteer as a teacher through Junior Achievement at an inner-city high school. My decision to do that had nothing to do with having been forced to pick up trash on Saturdays while in high school.

Again, I think its great when people get involved and give of their time. I don't believe I'm alone however in the feeling one gets from doing a service when its one they choose vs. being forced. Call it my inner libertarian coming out... tell the government to f*ck off when it comes to forcing kids to do these things.

Exactly my point. Your school district was sub-par. You didn't want to live in projects when you grew up. So you took the initiative to get out of that area, get a college education, and start a career for yourself. I'm pretty certain that you've worked hard and put in long hours in order to further your career. Something made you develop that work ethic. Can you say with certainty that your earlier experiences had nothing to do with it?

You volunteered at an inner-city high school. Maybe you shared your own experiences to motivate the kids to better themselves. It's not about picking up trash, it's about motivating yourself and trying to motivate others to do the best they can. Maybe you would have done all of this anyway, even without the community service requirement. But I can't see how it hurt you.

Many school districts have the community service requirement. Parents like it, the school and the community benefit from it. I do believe that if the vast majority of taxpayers were against community service it couldn't be forced into the curriculum.

Hundreds of thousands of words in the english language and yet you seem incapable of making a point without using the "c" word.

Twice.

Anyone who needs such language obviously can't make their point rationally.
