Sigh....Brits move to BAN Glass

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11392685
Alcohol should be served far more often in plastic glasses and bottles to reduce the injury toll from violent attacks, says a researcher.
Dr Alasdair Forsyth, from the Glasgow Centre for the Study of Violence, told a conference that the use of glass as a weapon could be eliminated.
He wants retailers to consider moving to plastic alongside bars and clubs.
A fellow expert said targeting city centres and late-night clubs and pubs should be the priority.
Some estimates put the cost of glass-related violence to the NHS, police and courts at more than £100m a year.

The precise number of violent attacks involving glass each year is unknown, although the crime surveys suggest it may run into six figures.

Dude....

I know it's pretty common to find sensationalist articles about what crazy thing the Brits are looking to do next. But seriously? Banning Glass bottles?

Dude, have you ever seen a british soccer riot?

This law seems totally merited!

I was kidding man.

I actually don't care about the horrific glass ban.

As long as glass bongs aren't banned, I ain't stressed!

Why do you think Budweiser invented the plastic bottle? Its not just the Brits. Hasn't glass been banned at most US sporting events?

So many of you sports fans have shown penchant for violence when your frustration at a) sucking at the sport so you are relegated to the stands, and b) your team sucks. So you let your emotions run amok and throw something at the guy next to you.

Pussies.

They banned those long ago. If you think that hot glass makes it better then clearly you haven't seen a Soccer Hooligan beating the snot out of another in something somebody mentioned earlier called something like a Soccer Riot.... Totally merited that was.

That's exactly how their knife ban started too.

Like I said, it's easy to find something crazy like this, but seriously the fact that they even printed it means someone else things it's a good idea.

Seriously, our press will print just about anything.

We've had yearly calls from the British Medical Association conference for a ban on boxing for as long as i can remember. The result - more schools are now bringing boxing back into the curriculum.

What doctors can't seem to understand is that they aren't elected and should concentrate their minds on fixing the livers of people who'd rather be down the pub drinking beer out of glasses made from glass rather that being lectured by pontificating doctors who think eliminating all risk is desirable.

Thanks for your sage wisdom Charver. And sorry bout the double post. I'd edit it or somethin but.... yeah....

I had seen something on the telly that showed that different companies were working on substitutes for glass in pubs. Seems pint glasses end up injuring more than just a few people in English Pubs. Wait! I have an idea, make striking someone with a glass bottle or glass anything a felony. Here in NM it is aggravated battery and you can do 3 years for it. But beer sucks in plastic. If on tap, it MUST be served in a glass. Plastic Bud cups suck but you only put Bud in it so no one notices.

Yes, because upping the penalties eliminates the problem. We've seen this approach work numerous times in the drug war.

Sometimes penalties are to remove the offender from the bar. Remove enough people how hit with glasses from the bar and there will be less problems. I have been piss drunk several times in my life drinking beer and it never occurred to be to hit someone with a glass. So the penalty won't affect me or MOST beer drinkers I suspect. Just the assholes, and no one wants them at the bar anyway.

Apparently there are a couple of new shatterproof pint glasses that are heading toward being trialled in pubs shortly. I really don't have a problem with this as you still get to drink out of a proper glass and you won't notice any difference from the current glasses.

I really do have a problem being asked to drink out of a bloody plastic beaker.
