Sievierodonetsk’s civilians told to stay in cellars as Russian forces advance

Mayor says about half of Ukrainian city where 13,000 people remain has fallen to forces advancing ‘block by block’

Russian forces have taken about half of Sievierodonetsk in eastern Ukraine, its mayor has said, as heavy fighting continued in and around the key city and civilians were told to stay underground.

Oleksandr Striuk said artillery bombardments were threatening the lives of the thousands of civilians still sheltering in the ruined city, with evacuations not possible.

“Half of the city has been captured by the Russians and fierce street fighting is under way,” Striuk said. “The situation is very serious and the city is essentially being destroyed ruthlessly block by block.

“The Ukrainian military continues to resist this frenzied push and aggression by Russian forces. Unfortunately … the city has been split in half. But at the same time the city still defends itself. It is still Ukrainian,” he said, advising those still trapped inside to stay in cellars.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Tuesday said the country’s forces have seized full control of the residential areas of Sievierodonetsk, a key city in Ukraine's east, while also announcing the arrest of thousands of Ukrainian troops.

The top defense official announced that the Russian forces were now controlling 97 percent of the former Soviet republic’s restive Luhansk region after weeks of fierce fighting between the two warring sides.

just last night Zelensky TV was saying Sievierodonetsk is 20% retaken...who knows
I dont buy any of the daily coverage by anyone
 
If the Russians take Odessa it won't much matter what anybody says. Fat Lady sings and goodnight.

The Black Sea might have NATO warships soon to get grain shipments thru the Russian naval deployment

Of course the pulverization of Ukraine and Zelensky claiming his high losses means Uk might run out of
artillery fodder to halt Russian advances
