Russian troops walked into an ambush in Grozny. That's how that armored column got cornered. The correct Russian response would be to modify tactics - like the American and British armies do - not to shell a city into oblivion.

No, NATO could not oust them, it would still be up to Ukraine. And Crimea greatly benefited economically from the presence of the Russian Navy. So they would not boot them.
Russia lost all rights to Sevastopol when the Soviet Union collapsed. They deserve to lose it if they are not willing to negotiate a new lease.
Crimea WAS invaded by Russian troops (LGM) who threatened to kill anyone who opposed them.
NATO wasn't the issue. The renegotiation of the Sevastopol lease is what triggered Putin to invade. Obama's weak pansy response emboldened him to keep expanding that invasion into other parts of Ukraine.

The Chechen rebel militia had nothing more than Cold War-era RPGs, Molotov cocktails, and AK-47s, and the Russians still decided to level the city of Grozny.
The USA went into Iraq against a foe better-armed than the Chechen militia, and we managed to not wholesale level Badgdad and Basra into piles of ash.

That is B.S. the Russian military flattened cities in Syria and Chechnya when only local militias were facing off against them.
It's obvious now that indiscriminate shelling is Russian military doctrine, period, end of story. Russia has always been an artillery army, and what existed of it's capable airborne troops and special forces were probably seriously degraded in the Battle of Kyiv.
