Should Two- and Four-Year Degrees Be Free?

I take it you have not seen what the public education system in this country already turns out.

I used to be a teacher and a sub but that was like over 20 years ago. Now I hear all about it from my friend down in Florida who is a teacher.

Yes I know the education has gone down the crapper.

Then, can you explain it? No one else knows what that means.

Well, I guess no one else has a free 2 year degree like I do. And let me tell you about that degree. It was not actually “free”. And I spent EVERY CENT of that GI bill money for that thing, which at the time wouldn’t even pay for 1 year of the bachelor’s degree I really wanted. But it allowed me to get a teaching job that I really loved. But to answer your question, if you knew that your 35 year old barista at Starbucks had a bachelor degree in gender studies, and that you helped pay for it, would you consider that to be a good investment?

What is it about the liberal arts the rightists are so obsessed about?

All about Starbucks. No one with a BA works anywhere but Starbucks.

lol..how many times can you soak the rich?
everytime Biden/Progs come up with more spending they "offset" it with taxes on da rich.
it's infrastructure, COVID. jobs bills, and now you want free higher education paid for by the same?

Yep

The Biden administration has proposed reforms to ease the student-debt crisis. But a real solution must upend a system of cascading inequities. Restoring the dream of higher education as an equalizer requires a holistic solution that attacks all the sources of the problem: a lack of investment in common goods, growing tuition and student debt and exploitative labor practices that undermine the quality of education.

The rise in tuition costs, combined with the growing economic value of a college degree, fuels the crisis of student debt, which today totals $1.7 trillion. To pay for a year of school, three-quarters of American families pay at least 24 percent of their average family income, even after grants are distributed.

It sure would help with the wealth gap.

I’m not obsessed about liberal arts. I just don’t want to pay for someone’s college degree in them. It’s just the principle of the thing. Lefty’s piss and moan about all the science and technology based “problems”(most fabricated BTW)that exist today. You’d think that the government would be scouring the high schools for the little STEM brainiacs that are gonna save us all. The only part the government should actually play in this scheme is that of talent scout. Let big tech pay for their education. American universities should be focused on hard core rigorous STEM until these “crises” are dealt with, and 2 year schools on vocational certifications. Liberal arts degrees are for bored retired empty-nesters with disposable income.

So no engineer needs English skills.

But this is about the disadvantaged students. Nobody else.

Weird how quickly you backtracked from being a Trumpist poseur working class defender, to a defender of the wealth and estate of Kim Kardashian.

France, Germany, Norway, Finland, Sweden have free, publicly funded college education.

If they can afford it, so can we.

How does a disadvantaged student get a student loan in the first place? Especially for something like a major in, say, psychology. The government should pay off my truck. It would be a much better ROI, and I’d have a lot more disposable income.
