i wonder what you all think about this

seems to me that too many of the newsies do not know the difference between the gitmo prison and gitmo
 
Yes, i think you should return it to them.

Once the problem of the detainees is solved the actual naval base serves very little practical purpose any more. Guantanamo's return and an abandonment of the pointless blockade should be the natural outcome of a normalisation of relations with Cuba. That would be in everyone's best interests.

Well, i suppose the policies adopted by successive administrations have sustained a Castro in power for this long.

The Castro grandchildren are probably hoping for a continuation of current policy indefinitely.

perhaps, but i do not think the policy will last past castro's death

maybe bho will see a cost savings in shutting down gitmo :)

Before the detainees were shipped there, Gitmo was used as a training facility for the US Navy. I was there in '82 and had a blast.

Besides, if we leave we will have to clean up one of the world's largest minefields.

Well, ok. But a cursory glance at America's tiny coastline tells me that you could probably manage to find an alternate location to train the Navy.

When the US initially refused to hand it back to Cuba there was at least an argument for Guantanamo being strategically important.

The first thought that springs to mind is one of the bases surrounding Baghdad.

However, i do appreciate there may be some initial difficulties in manoeuvring an aircraft carrier in the desert.

Are you kidding me Charver? It took us 400 years to get you bloody Limey's out of the Caribbean and now you want us to open up the back door again? Not bloody likely!

Gitmo has huge strategic significance for the region. It's the Caribbean/Central American equivalent of Manila/Subic Bay.

Once Castro dies, and we normalize relations with Cuba, Gitmo could have a huge economic impact on the region.

We and the Cubans should do something akin to what was done with the Old Subic Bay facility. The Filipino's now understand that closing down Subic Bay, cart blanche, was a huge mistake with disasterous economic consequences for the Filipinos. So their turning that old facility into an international Free Trade Zone was a stroke of genius though it would still have been better if they had kept the Americans there in a reduced capacity.

That's what the Cubans should do. Learn from the Filipino's mistakes. Re-negotiate the Gitmo treaty to lessen the Americans military presence there and turn Gitmo into an international Free Trade Zone. The economic impact for the Cubans would be huge and immediate.

You'd kill two birds with one stone. The Americans could preserve the regions strategic interest (i.e. keeping you damned Colonialist in Europe where you belong! ;-) while opening Cuba (and the Caribbean) up to trade.

Oh I have a great Free Market idea on how to deal with the mine field there. We'll create a new sport called "Extreme Golfing". We'll send wannabe athletes like Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson to play there. If they survive 9 rounds there then for the first time in their lives they'll be able to make a decent argument that they are actually athletes.

Alternatively we could send disgraced and corrupt Wall Street and Investment Bankers there with their clubs for 18 holes. If they survive, they won't be prosecuted.

Not a bad idea, huh? :)

From bitter experience the Admiralty have discovered the only way to ensure there is absolutely no possibility of fraternisation in the naval ranks is never to allow two male crew members to serve on the same vessel.
