New Year’s Day brings new laws to Georgia. The state legislature passed a number of measures in 2008. Most went into effect in July, but a handful take effect the first of the year. Among them:

The law allows foreigners who are temporarily in the United States to keep their home country drivers license after they obtain a Georgia license. Previously, a visitor had to surrender the foreign license. This cuts down on bureaucracy for business travelers and other legal visitors who want to drive in Georgia, but who will need their original license when they go home, said bill sponsor, Sen. Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock.) The law also allows refugees and other legal immigrants who are in the country indefinitely to renew their license once every three years, instead of every year. This cuts down on unnecessary paperwork for legal immigrants, Rogers said.

Requires registered sex offenders to hand over Internet passwords and screen names. While federal law requires authorities to track Internet addresses, Georgia goes further and wants passwords too.

If you will recall GA had that peep in the window and turn in your neighbor movement going as well.

Bible belt stuff.

Ohh yeah back during the height of Newt's power they had a law about reporting neighbors illegal sex activity and such...

Interesting enough they also have one of the youngest age of consent laws in the USA.
truck drivers love GA.

seems like an irony. I wonder how much regulation we are in store for with The Clintion Czar trying to push there agenda vicariously through Obama?

Hi Chloe,

This is a great law and hopefully every state will have this, hardly bible belt stuff, every decent parent I am sure would want this.

i wonder how they plan on enforcing the password law?
Well it says they already require them to hand over their Internet (IP) address, from that I'm sure they have ways of determining where they go and if so require any sites they register at for them to divulge their usernames and passwords.

Some of these offenders may well do this while in jail and that of course would be dead easy to track everything.

Right dead easy

Umm your IP is from the terminal you are using it is not tatooed to you.
Of course they will always use the same terminal.

I am sure there are ways around any safety measure. But I see no real problem with this law.

I would like to see it reserved for the child molesters, as opposed to the 15 year old who had consentual sex with the 14 year old.

Again, there is no real way to enforce this law. All this will do is allow prosecutors to add extra charges AFTER the fact, if the offender is ever caught again. A stupid feel good law that will do nothing to prevent anything.

Idiocy is the norm nowadays

If the pervert is using a computer in his home, and this law is allowed to be used, they can attach tracking devices that will show where he goes and make it possible to remotely access the computer any time.

other than the usual possibilities of the 'offender' using PC's not his own (library, PC labs, etc), you're proposing to basically remove any 4th amendment protections, which wouldn't be a far stretch anymore considering that the constitution doesn't exist anymore, is that what i'm hearing?

As much as it grieves me to do this I have to agree.
