I wouldn't say there was a time when it was mostly polite & engaging. But, there was a time when the hateful elements didn't dominate.

In the '70's & '80's, there was more of an undercurrent of respect, even though disagreements could get intense & even personal.

i talked with grandfather about this once and he told me in the 50's political discussions did not contain the element of hate they contain today. he said it was mostly polite and engaging....could just be his circle and opinion of things, which is why i don't hold it as gospel. today, unlike the 70's and 80's, it seems more about spreading hate, misinformation, rather than discussing actual political ideas or different ways to make our government better. there has always been trash talk in politics, and we can see this from comics dating back to the 1800's. maybe it is just me, but it seems both sides are ramping up the rhetoric to levels we haven't experienced before.
 
The Democrat party has been hijacked by a bunch of nasty Godless Marxists who do not respect America and our culture. That's the problem. The Democrat party opened their tent to anything that votes to keep their power and this is the result.
 
Discourse may have always been dead for hardcore politicos and ideologues but what is different today is the absurdity of even simple debate. 'Hate,' are you serious? That was funny and while zombie may offend the offendable, the zombies mentioned all repeat the same slogans as if they were zombies. Say government, taxes, welfare, and the zombies all salivate. Just recently one zombie said something about right wing social engineering and this particular zombie almost lost his zombie card, and had to repeat sorry sorry sorry for a week. LOL

so the republican party should be classified only by the far right religious members who want a smaller government, but yet want more government intrusion into their personal lives?

:lol: Poor Newt. He had his day in the sun. He should have quietly faded to the back benches with dignity. Reminds me a bit of McCain. McCain was an all-round respected guy until the '08 election.

i get a kick out of idiots who think that TEA party people are 'brain dead', especially considering that it's been the establishment politicos (that would be you) economic policies that have driven more than one country near bankruptcy.
