Senator proposes permanent US bases in Afghanistan

Military bases to protect other countries is a myth. US military bases exist for one thing and one thing only:

To protect US trade.

Unfortunately they generate mistrust and hatred in the host countries and so they must be armed to defend THEMSELVES.
Ummm Low.... I know you're very slow at grasping points here, but try and follow.

I never asserted that the PURPOSE of American military bases on foreign soil was anything other than protecting American interests. But the fact remains that an American presence in the region can do a lot to stabilize, and therefore protect, those regions.

And I suppose you say this with the benefit of having been around those bases? Because all the ones I've been to (Iceland, Italy, Germany, Kuwait, Iraq) the civvies fucking loved us.

If you, as an American, ask the locals if they love you, they will usually answer in the affirmative. They also are not stupid and will enjoy the business opportunities the bases afford. Some might even enjoy the prospect of selling the odd bridge!
There is no black or white BUT I wonder how Americans would feel if there were Japanese or British or German military bases on your soil.

Remember Greenham Common? I do. I went to support the ladies there (and had my car photographed) and joined with the vast majority of Brits who rejoiced when America learned that it could not dictate to everyone on the planet.
I know Chinese who screamed with delight at the 11th September attacks but who would vow love and loyalty when you take out your wallets.
Don't believe the myths you are fed. Ask yourself why they tell you this stuff? Because they want you to know the truth?????

I think we're bogging each other down to minutia with petty details, so I'll redirect this discussion a little. Do you support our military bases on foreign soil? Because if you don't we're splitting hairs for no reason.

And to split some more hairs, we no longer have nukes in Turkey.

(1) I support some of them and oppose others.

(2) You sure about that?
