Senate passes bill to give police protection to families of Supreme Court justices

The First Amendment does not void the federal law making it illegal to protest at the homes of Supreme Court Justices.
 
Title 18, Section 1507 of the United States Code provides an official position of the U.S. government that the press secretary could not provide.

“Whoever, with the intent of interfering with, obstructing, or impeding the administration of justice, or with the intent of influencing any judge, juror, witness, or court officer, in the discharge of his duty, pickets or parades in or near a building housing a court of the United States, or in or near a building or residence occupied or used by such judge, juror, witness, or court officer, or with such intent uses any sound-truck or similar device or resorts to any other demonstration in or near any such building or residence, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.”
 
It would expand protections from the Supreme Court Police to the immediate family members of Supreme Court justices.

"Threats to the physical safety of Supreme Court Justices and their families are disgraceful, and attempts to intimidate and influence the independence of our judiciary cannot be tolerated," said Senator Cornyn in a press release ahead of the bipartisan vote.

"If the families of supreme court justices have the same profile and exposure as the highest ranking officials in our government, they deserve the same level of protection," Senator Coons added.

Protests do not have to be violent at the homes of Supreme Court Justices to be a violation of the US Code.

They aren’t just citizens, they are members of the highest court in America and the US Code says it is a crime to intimidate them to change their vote.
