Sen. Tim Scott And The Embarrassing Black Conservatives Who Ignore Racism

Don’t have to, from the portrayal I am getting from your fellow wingers I already knows what it implies, that black or white, the Horatio Alger America still exists. Even adolescent white kids know that is not real, and black kids, got to laughing at it

If we take a step back, how bad must the rest of the world be that so many people of color still choose to immigrate to a fundamentally racist and oppressive country like America?

Ha! I knew you'd like that. He is from Boston and his comment was racist AF.

I'm not sure if people purposefully miss the nuance, or just flat out don't care and want to misrepresent what he said. He didn't say racism doesn't exist (he went through the racism his family had to deal with), what he's arguing is while yes there is racism kids today have opportunities that previous generations may not have. I don't know why that is viewed as such a threatening statement but clearly it is setting people off.

And since you're getting partisan we know the reason why. Each political party tries to paint the other in an unfavorable light. For Democrats, they want to show America as this oppressive fundamentally racist country still stuck in 1950 or prior and the leaders of that are Republicans so you need to be on our side. Therefore anyone talking of progress is almost a threat to their base belief (if America is seen as less racist then our demagoguery might be less effective).

Was listening to a podcast the other day on education. A black woman who teaches African-American history told the story of a young black girl in her class who lives in a Cosby Show type family who asked this teacher about being oppressed. The teacher knew instantly that this girl didn't feel oppressed because she came from a well to do home but what she took in from others told her that she is actually oppressed. That's just one example but it's relevant to what we're dealing with. Are teenagers in America in 2023 really that oppressed that they should believe they have limited to no future?

Never said it was a “threatening statement,” just one ignoring the realities, he is selling the Horatio Alger theme, which anyone, even kids, know is unrealistic, especially black kids

Cause they bought the same Mark the Matchboy dream, and I don’t know why you think recognizing the reality relates to viewing America as “fundamentally and oppressive country”

On a personal level, my nieces and nephew are black. Is it my duty to inform them not to dream big because America is oppressive and racist and won't allow them to achieve them? (and who here is talking about simply being rich? People's dream and aspirations don't have to include being rich.)

Because his claim previously that while there is racism in America it is not a fundamentally racist country set people off.

Doesn’t have to be your ‘duty,” they’ll learn that on their own, if you help, educate them of the reality so their disappointments don’t lead to bitterness

the legal immigrants feel confident they can outperform those sitting around waiting for their government handouts....

Recognizing that America is not the image Alger created doesn’t mean it is “fundamentally a racist country,” you seem to want it both ways, it ain’t, you can be the most talented, intelligent, educated, and astute kid in the world, but that doesn’t mean you are going to succeed, especially if you are black, and point out that reality doesn’t mean you are attacking America

Holy sh*t. Wow. To each his own but we just see the world in a very different way. Why would I tell any kid that today? (stating the obvious, not every kid reaches their life goals but to tell a kid they basically have no agency over their future? And I'm somehow doing them a favor by telling them that?)

Success is never guaranteed. That's separate from having the opportunity to pursue you dreams. You single out black people but is that because you don't think they are capable? Why should they be any less able to pursue their goals?

Don’t forget to teach them to vote for liberals since they are the only political ideology looking out for them.

Tim Scott a typical Uncle Tom?!!

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) spoke of his newly announced presidential run Monday on "The View" on ABC.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) hopped in the 2024 presidential race Monday with a campaign speech in his hometown of North Charleston, South Carolina.

Scott employed language similar to every other Black evangelical politician: “Victimhood or victory? I choose freedom, hope and opportunity.” “I disrupt their narrative.” And more language suggested that he refuses to be defined by his Blackness.

In his most attention-grabbing comments, Scott diminished the existence of racism to what appears to be a largely white audience.

“For those of you who wonder if America is a racist country, take a look… at how all of God’s people come together… because unconditional love binds hearts together,” Scott said. “We are not defined by the color of our skin; we’re defined by the content of our character. If anyone tells you anything different, they’re a-lyin’!”

Scott doubled down on this inherently flawed idea as a guest on Monday’s episode of ”The View,” suggesting that the American playing field is level because Black folks have achieved high-level jobs within the U.S. government and elsewhere (though the audience reserved their boos for when he regurgitated the asinine suggestion of his competitor, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, that Disney is “indoctrinating” children with evil LGBTQ propaganda.)

Most sensible Black folks see through this bullshit like a Ziploc bag. For the woefully uninitiated, however, I’ll put the snark on hold, just for a second: Racism is forever. And it’s everywhere, including America. That no one is dragging Black folks by their noosed necks behind moving cars in the open anymore doesn’t suggest it’s completely nonexistent in all its forms.

Look no further than the 2016 election of Donald Trump, which galvanized the tiki-torch protesters and U.S. Capitol insurrectionists to say all the quiet parts very loudly in a manner I hadn’t seen before in my life. Having working eyes and ears and suggesting that racism is a thing of the past is like passing the third grade convinced that the Earth is flat.

Yet, Scott is just one of several charisma-free, cookie-cutter conservative House Negroes propagating the notion that Black folks bucking up and letting go of that pesky racism issue that apparently hasn’t been an issue since the mid-20th century is the true anodyne for all our problems. When these clowns vie for their respective political thrones, it’s almost always on the back of Black Democrats whom they insist are playing the “race card” as victims.

You Nazis sure are some fucking racist piles of shit.

But to insinuate, whisper, suggest or otherwise come right out and say that the “other side” is actively trying to hold you back if you are a POC … what is that? Because that is what conservative people of color (Watt, Carson, Scott … and other not so public figures) are growing weary of hearing.

Other white GOP nominees, however, would love to run with a Black man from the South who - despite centuries of slavery, lynchings and Jim Crow - gleefully tells white voters what they want to hear: that “America is not a racist country,” as he said in 2021 when he gave the Republican Party’s response to President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union address.

For white GOP nominees, Scott would serve as a shield, blocking descriptions of the party as racist. “See? I can’t be racist; I’m running with a Black guy!”

Scott’s biography is central casting-perfect for such a role.

Haha!

It's sad to me how much partisan politics dominates thinking. If we're talking black people specifically does any other race have to deal with people like Ken and NN who throw racial slurs at them for simply not voting they way they want them to? Questioning why someone votes the way they do is fine and fair game, declaring that someone is no longer a member of their race is kind of the definition of white supremacy (do as I say or else)

You're a teacher dealing with teenagers. Do you tell your kids not to dream big because in reality they have no future so why bother? (plus America is so racist you won't be able to go after your goals even if you're talented enough.)

In your opinion why do so many immigrants of color continue to come to such a racist country?

This little, old white lady doesn’t comment on the issue, I just know his comment isn’t being lauded by a lot of blacks on social media, his denial there isn’t systemic racism is especially offensive to the blacks who are commenting.

One comment I find to be true, “the presence of progress, doesn’t prove the absence of racism.” Keith Boykin

I’m happy Scott doesn’t experience racism, but that’s not every black person’s reality.

I still say the liberal’s biggest fear is a politically active and successful POC. Because of that they’ll do everything they can to sabotage them…look for every skeleton in every closet, every misspoken word in every speech and then see to it that it is shown and highlighted on complicit news programs … which is most of them.
