Science does not describe reality

If we define sound as that which humans detect, then a tree falling does not make sound if no humans detect it. A seeming sublime Zen koan that is easily answered.

Is that how we define sound and does only our definition matter?

What if we feel a reverberation?

What if an animal beside us with better hearing, hears it?

Do racoons do science?

What does that mean?

There are animals we know that have better smell, hearing and sight than humans do.

if we define sound by 'if a human cannot hear it then it does not exist'... and same for sight and smell... what does that mean when we see animals react to sound, sight and smells we cannot detect?

Is your view we would say they are reacting to nothing?

Thread is about science and the two schools: empiricism and realism.

And?

You said this...

...If we define sound as that which humans detect, then a tree falling does not make sound if no humans detect it.

So again i ask the question and you can answer it via a scientific answer.

If that tree falls and no human is close enough to detect it but the animal next to you hears it, are you saying it made no sound as only humans count via science?

As i am unaware of any such principle in science and cannot discern what you are trying to say.

Sorry, I get tired of thread where people talk about everything but the topic.
