I'm sitting in an empty classroom right now. My two classes of younger students aren't learning anything this week due to having to resort to "distance" learning. I'm just trying to keep them caught up so that they don't lose what we've learned in the first 4 weeks this year. My older students in the advanced math class will be fine as they will be able to do the work after watching the Youtube videos I created for them. We have missed three days this week and hopefully we will be back in person on Monday.
We have three COVID cases in our elementary staff. We had to shut down because we don't have enough staff and substitues (drug tests, you know) to cover their classes. If we did we'd still be teaching in person.
I don't know what the end game is going to be with this COVID pandemic but I know that if we continue NOT to have kids in the classroom in person we are going to be in a real educational bind. We are in one already. Speaking only for my field, our kids are woefully behind in Mathematics. When I get them I do my best to get them caught up but have only been able to get them "on level" in about 5 of my 34 years. One can only do so much. You have to take them from where they are and get them as far as you can. "Them" ... the majority of the class, not just the elite/smart kids. It isn't going to happen with public school "distance learning" any more than it is going to happen with the likes of Epic and other online charter schools.
