Santorum blames abortion for Social Security woes

I see this and my initial reaction is this type of comment might play well with social conservatives but it leaves others shaking their heads. I don't think he has much a chance to win the Republican nomination let alone the Presidency.

In his latest trip to New Hampshire, Republican Rick Santorum says the Social Security system would be in much better shape if there were fewer abortions.

The former Pennsylvania senator and potential presidential candidate was asked about Social Security during an interview on WESZ-AM radio in Laconia on Tuesday morning.

He says the system has design flaws, but the reason it is in big trouble is that there aren't enough workers to support retirees. He blamed that on what he called the nation's abortion culture. He says that culture, coupled with policies that do not support families, deny America what it needs _ more people.

Santorum has been a frequent visitor to New Hampshire, which holds the earliest presidential primary.

From a purely numbers and logic position he's right-

Obviously this guy has never driven in Seattle. If there were any more people around, I'd either kill them or myself.

That said, it makes sense that Social Security would be in better shape if there were more young workers putting into the system. That's undeniable. But abortion is only part of the overall drop in the birthrate. I wonder, does Sanitarium also favor banning birth control?

If your answer to the SS problem is "we need to keep increasing our population exponentially," you probably need to go back to the drawing board...

For the idiots that don't get it~

The Severe Impact Of Europe's Declining Birth Rate:

The spiritual concerns aside, though, the main threats to Europe are economic. Alongside birthrate, the other operative factor in the economic equation is lifespan. People everywhere are living longer than ever, and lifespan is continuing to increase beyond what was once considered a natural limit. Policy makers fear that, taken together, these trends forecast a perfect demographic storm. According to a paper by Jonathan Grant and Stijn Hoorens of the Rand Europe research group: “Demographers and economists foresee that 30 million Europeans of working age will ‘disappear’ by 2050. At the same time, retirement will be lasting decades as the number of people in their 80s and 90s increases dramatically.” The crisis, they argue, will come from a “triple whammy of increasing demand on the welfare state and health-care systems, with a decline in tax contributions from an ever-smaller work force.” That is to say, there won’t be enough workers to pay for the pensions of all those long-living retirees. What’s more, there will be a smaller working-age population compared with other parts of the world; the U.S. Census Bureau’s International Database projects that in 2025, 42 percent of the people living in India will be 24 or younger, while only 22 percent of Spain’s population will be in that age group. This, in the wording of a Demographic Fitness Survey by the Adecco Institute, a London-based research group, will result in a “war for talent.” And the troubles for Europe are magnified by other factors in the existing welfare states of many of its countries. Europeans are used to early retirement — according to the Adecco survey, only 60 percent of men in France between the ages of 50 and 64 are still working.

That's why he's an idiot. You need more then just people. They have to be productive people earing an income. Having more poor people would be a drain on the system. The reason we have such a low birth rate has nothing (or very little) to do with either abortion or birth control and everything to do with the cost of raising children to adult hood by first world standards. I know that those who only have a couple of kids and who earn the median household income have very difficult struggles just making ends meet let alone sending junior to college and getting little Suzy the braces she needs. Economic play a far larger role in our declining birth rate then any wedge issue like abortion or birth control.

So your position is that declining birth rates have not been linked to economic woes including entitlement spending and social programs? That's your position?
No, my position is that Santorum is an idiot. There is certainly a link between decling birth rates and economics but you little missy have it ass backwards. It's the economics which primarily impact low birth rates and not some stupid wedge issue.

That has to be one of the dumbest things I have heard.... only Mott's racist behavior today can top that kind of stupidity.

The echo boomer generation is larger than the baby boomers. While there are certainly problems with SS, abortion is not one of them. We really should be able to shoot idiots like that.

If we saw ever decreasing size in each subsequent generation, he MIGHT have a partial point. But we are not seeing that. It isn't even close to being the driver behind the problems with SS.

Well little mr. You have Santorum wrong- He called it an "abortion culture" combined with design flaws in SS...he is right. The culture created by abortion is one where family and marriage is not valued- children and relationships are disposable. Healthy family structures create prosperity. Mind you, he never claimed that this in and of itself is the problem...but it lends to the problem.
