SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Voters are deciding whether to tax mansions to pay for affordable housing initiatives in a state capital city prized for its desert-mountain vistas, vibrant arts scene and stucco architecture rooted in Native American and Spanish-colonial tradition.

The tax on homes sold for more than $1 million is being pitched as a lifeline to teachers, service-sector workers, single parents and young professionals who can’t afford local mortgages or struggle to pay rent amid a national housing shortage and the arrival in Santa Fe of high-income digital nomads and affluent retirees.

Chasing the wealthy away is a stupid strategy unless destroying the community is a feature not a bug.

How does the state taking money help people pay their mortgages?

I assume that property taxes are based on value appraisals.
Why would they want to tax on top of that?
Perhaps they want their comfortable residents to leave and take their money with them.

We need to be worrying about raising floors.
Lowering ceilings first just looks like jealousy.

Well, New Mexico has long been a badly run Democrat state. This is just typical of Democrats. Tear down the successful while doing little or nothing to raise up the bottom of society other than give handouts and platitudes...

Why is the left always looking for a handout of some kind? Laziness? Are they just lame? Stupidity mixed with a heavy dose of sloth? Were they born that way or propagandized into the lifestyle of the lame? This is the land of unlimited opportunity for those willing to work hard and more importantly work SMART!

There are only three red states that have lost population since 2021, and in both the decline was insignificant. Those states are: Iowa, W. Virginia, and Mississippi.

Every other state, in all 16, are Blue. New York and Illinois top the list with the biggest losses by percentage. By sheer number of people leaving, it's New York first and California second. Illinois comes in a close third.

So, you can whine and groan all you want, but it's obvious that people are fed up with the Left, Progressives, and Democrats and are voting with their feet. High taxes, onerous regulations, intrusive government, and the cost of living all make people leave.
