She is correct in that in ages past, older ppl initiating younger ppl into adulthood was not seen as criminal. Even in our own history, her comments about Xtianity aside, girls often got married in their young teenage years. She is right that "highly religious parents" often attempt to make sexuality shameful, particularly for female children.
As humans in the industrial world have transitioned from mostly agricultural lifestyles to modern ones, and drastically decreased child mortality, we've extended childhood culturally. Along with that come child labor laws and laws forbidding sexual relations with young teens. Personally I think we are wise to postpone sexual activity until the kids are mature physically and emotionally. Therefore laws protecting them from adult predation are righteous, IMO. I cannot agree with her that a 13 yr old, or even a 16 yr old, is emotionally mature enough to understand and deal with the consequences of sexual activity, whether that's with another young teen or with an adult. Therefore they are not, IMO as both a parent and health care professional, not capable of giving informed consent.
