San Francisco bans Happy Meals

Listen, removing the HOOK used to entice kids to choose a road to 'Frumpy Meal' is not going to solve childhood obesity, but it's not going to compromise and corrupt capitalism either. Maybe a smart McDonalds exec will see an opportunity to entice parents to drive their kids there by placing a toy in a meal that is filled with healthy and nutritious food in a biodegradable box.

But there is one tenet of a true free market that is being ignored here. You can't get rich by making other people poor. Those kids walk away with poorer health, and a future filled with heath issues, peer ridicule, lower self esteem and very expensive medical bills. That is not my definition of a 'happy' meal.

And then they could all ride Unicorns across the rainbow, and sleep on fluffy clouds. :palm:

That has been my point from the beginning. If the MEAL is so desirable, then let's apply the conservative litmus test...'personal responsibility' the MEAL must be personally responsible to entice consumption. The 'toy' is a form of subsidy, which is welfare.

It is the job of thinking people not to be on the side of the executioners.
Albert Camus

Then movie theaters should stop showing films for children; because it's just an enticement to get them to buy buttered popcorn, candy, and sodas. :palm:

I had to post this... it sums it up better than anything anyone has said yet...

From Michelle Malkin: "In the City by the Bay, if you want to roller skate naked down Castro Street wearing a phallic-symbol hat and snorting an eight-ball off a transgender hooker’s chest while underage kids run behind you handing out free heroin needles, condoms and coupons to the grand opening of the neighborhood’s ...newest bathhouse, that’s your right as a free citizen of the United States. But if you want to put a Buzz Lightyear toy in the same box with a hamburger and fries and sell it, you’re outta line, mister!"

:rofl:

I can't wait for the laws to pass that weigh fat people before they can enter the market, and then tell them what they can purchase.

That's when we will really see how well the government knows better than us!

:rofl:

You sarcastically sneer: 'I can't wait for the laws to pass that weigh fat people before they can enter the market'...Well guess what; no laws have been passed, but guess what else...corporations are not government, so they don't have to pass laws, they just implement 'policy'.

Airlines to charge obese passengers extra

That is not government, that is corporations charging more.

And guess what ELSE...

Most travelers say obese passengers should pay more

Here's something to try to digest (no pun intended). We, the People ARE the government and no man or women is an island. And We the People ARE the ones that will forced to absorb the $$$COST$$$ of We, the People's obesity epidemic. I understand and agree with freedom of choice and self determination. No one should dictate what you or I can eat, drink or ingest. BUT, just don't be naive and obstinate. WE ALL PAY for a society that has an obesity epidemic. So obesity is not a solely individual issue.

Obesity in America is a growing epidemic. Two out of every three adults are either overweight or obese. In addition, one out of every three children is either overweight or obese. We are teaching our unhealthy habits to our children and they will actually be sicker than we already are.

Obesity in America is similar to the 800 pound Gorilla in the room. We all see it. We all know it’s a problem. But we are all too scared or too lazy to create or execute a solution that will get rid of it.

How does that epidemic impact ALL of us? Do you really think it has no impact on soaring health care costs or that it is not passed on to you and me in premium increases?

Obesity-Related Diseases

The number of overweight and obese individuals is so alarming because carrying extra pounds increases the risks of developing many diseases including:

* Diabetes
* Cardiovascular disease
* Heart Disease
* Stroke
* Certain types of cancer
* High blood pressure
* High cholesterol
* Metabolic syndrome
* Sleep apnea
* Asthma
* Arthritis
* Gallbladder disease
* Liver disease
* Urinary incontinence
* Depression

Unhealthy and Expensive

Being overweight or obese does not just affect the person; it affects us all because of the financial burden it places on society. According to the CDC, during 2003 medical expenses attributed to people being overweight or obese were almost 75 billion dollars. That is a large sum of money, and is part of the reason why health care in America is so unaffordable.

You will have a considerable right to talk, when you have a business and the Government steps in and tells you what you're allowed to do, after you've been building a market over many years.
Until then, you're just another liberal who is sure that you know what's best for everyone else and that everyone else should just listen to you.

:good4u:

Well US, it is clear that any attempt at adult-like discussion or moderation is impossible with you right wing ideologues. The whole fucking world is a battle of polarized arguments and ABSOLUTES.

The child molester on the street corner near the school has been building a market over many years. Should we keep the government's hands off the candy he uses to entice his victims?

I fully anticipate you will be incredulous, because the child molester is 'breaking the LAW' and he is HARMING children.

Well here are the FACTS. Happy meals are HARMING children, and the TOY is the molester's 'candy'

the above is example of what happens when you go to the extreme of political and moral idealogues...it is sickening to see someone compare a mcdonald's use of a toy in a happy meal to a child molester...

with all the respect you're do bfgrn....fuck you

mott is opposed to toys with happy meals and happy meals themselves and has no problem with the government regulating such...now...let's see mott when it comes to marijuana and how the government should control HIS LIFE:

dig your way out of that mott....

any bets on whether mott will address this :)

McDonalds can still package the same poisons and call it a Happy Meal. They just can't use toys as enticements to poison kids.

Fact Check: How much is spent annually on obesity in the United States?

• A 2009 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with RTI International (a nonprofit research group), found that the direct and indirect cost of obesity "is as high as $147 billion annually." The study was based on figures collected in 2006.

• The study found that in 2006, obese patients spent an average of $1,429 more for their medical care than did people within a normal weight range. That is a 42 percent higher cost for people who are obese.

• The CDC study found that Medicare, Medicaid and private insurers increased spending due to obesity from 6.5 percent in 1998 to 9.1 percent in 2006. The figure includes prescription drug costs.
Video: Tackling childhood obesity

• Another 2009 study in the journal Health Affairs concluded that the costs of hospitalizations related to childhood obesity rose from $125.9 million in 2001 to $237.6 million in 2005. Bottom Line: America spends as much as $147 billion annually on the direct and indirect costs of obesity. In the year of the most recent CDC study, 2006, that made up 9.1 percent of medical spending.

Why the costs could be 'catastrophic' if we don't stop the epidemic now.

So if this stuff is harming children why is it a 'right wing tantrum' to suggest banning it?

And there are people on this thread completely disagreeing with your position who are not right wing. I know it makes it easier to label everyone as such but it is not the case.

Multiple people (including non 'right wing ideologues') have made excellent points on this thread.

And as was stated in a previous post you didn't respond to kids go to Burger King, Carl's Jr., Jack in the Box etc. that don't offer toys because they like the taste of the food. It's not the toy. Kids (and adults) like hamburgers, salty fries and sodas. To think kids won't want that food without a toy is to not understand children. And that had nothing to do with being an ideologue.

No Yurt, you are an example of someone who is too obtuse to understand the CONTEXT of my comment. If your read and comprehend what I said, I was confronting the extreme ideological, polarized and absolute arguments from 'conservatives' and the right on this issue with an EXAMPLE of how extreme that absolutism really is.

WHAT is it you can't comprehend? If you remove the toy, does that mean kids, parents and hobos can no longer buy a happy meal because they need their fix of 'hamburgers, salty fries and sodas' or that they 'like the taste of the food'???

If the kid needs a toy, take him to the toy store.

I didn't take your argument literally. I thought you were making another polarized, the end of life as we know it 'right wing' rant. I apologize.

So the liberals are decrying the meal as the problem, but they only want to ban the toy?

Ban the burgers and fries, you fucking socialists. The toy doesn't cause obesity.

Make them add toys that they have to be active to use, frisbees or some other such. No books, that would have them sitting down and getting fat.
