Unless there are salvage operations anticipated, Vlad Putin will forever sadly be known as the tsar who left a piece of the true Cross on the bottom of the Black Sea.

So unlikely was the loss of the ship in Moscow’s eyes that in 2020 Orthodox Christian officials said it had been designated to carry a piece of the “true cross,” a relic from the wooden cross on which Jesus Christ is said to have been crucified.

At the very least it will strike yet another blow at the image of the Russian military as a professional force carrying out what the Kremlin calls a “special operation” on the territory of Ukraine.

The ship’s sinking was “in sharp contrast with the image of a successfully modernised army promoted by Russian officials and state-owned media, and with the self-confidence with which Russia embarked on this war,” wrote Alexander Baunov, a political analyst.

I was just reading about their cruise missile failures as well. It seems that Russia has been fattening their oligarchs instead of maintaining their military.

It seems you are correct.

I guess running a criminal oligarchy leads to a lot of corruption, including the defense industry. Good thing we got rid of Trump.

It's easy to see why a substantial proportion of Russians still give Putin support. About a third of any country is attracted to authoritarianism and militant nationalism, including our own. The Hungarian, French, and Serbian rightwing nationalists always do reasonably well in elections.

I guess that is why the new Quinnipiac poll show 33 % of the country thinks Biden is doing a good job after he forced some people to take shots or lose their jobs.

It's that third of the country that believe and are afraid that they are being set aside by nonwhite people, how does Tucker put it, the "Great Replacement Theory," that there actually exists an effort designed to undermine or replace the political power and culture of white people.

Easy prey for demagogues, which Trump just capitalized on with his schtick and media savvy

Always a possibility, but watching how the Republicans are slowly sidestepping away from Trump tells me that idiocy won't last much longer. Especially if the White Supremacist Terrorists murder a bunch of Americans this summer.

What wise words. Unless he's got some unknown end game in mind, Putin really screwed the pooch on the invasion. I don't think that he understood that the world's sympathy would lie with Ukraine, exc. for some non-consequential conservative fascist symps like Trump and his tards.

That often happens with delusional people. He's not seeing it just like Trump couldn't see why plotting to overthrow the nation was wrong.

THE Russian warship Moskva which was sunk by Ukraine may have been carrying a piece of the True Cross, a Russian Orthodox priest has claimed.

In early 2020, the Russian Orthodox Church said the tiny relic which had belonged to the Catholic Church had been bought by an “anonymous patron of arts,” according to the state-run Russian news agency TASS.

"It was their will to send the relic to the [Black Sea] fleet. The Moskva cruiser has an onboard chapel, where services take place," archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Sevastopol District Sergiy Khalyuta told TASS.

The relic, made out of wood chip, is only several millimetres long, the church said.
