You forgot to mention the commissars machine-gunning their own troops to make them attack.
The Geneva Convention does not limit surrender to "windows." What you are mentioning is called a war crime.
And it is not mentioned in the article, even though you insert it into the article. Was it your FSB handler that told you of these "surrender windows"?

It sounds like when the Nazis declared Stalingrad completely cleared. They were at first mostly right, then mostly wrong, and finally completely right, but it was the Nazis who were completely cleared out.
OK, you say there is a window of time that the Russians will respect the Geneva Convention, and not kill POWs? Well even there, not really. All they are promising is to preserve life (not murder) POWs for a little while. They are pointedly not promising any of the other Geneva Convention protections.
So they are publicly admitting their signing of the Geneva Convention was a lie. Why would anyone believe them now?
Actually, death might be preferable to extended torture, so there is that.

I am also almost entirely against capital punishment, but I think in some cases, where the criminal is a leader of a large number of people, there is an exception. If Hitler had not killed himself, and he had been held as a prisoner, there would have been millions of Nazis desperate to break him out.
On the other hand, if Putin agreed to retire in luxury, it would be best to just give him 100% amnesty. Getting him out of power is the most important thing.
Either way, I always worry about a Napoleon's Hundred Days situation. Napoleon was defeated, but not executed. He was exiled to the Mediterranean Island of Elba. He escaped, raised a huge army, and had to be defeated again in little more than 100 days.
One thing about fighting behind the lines... The are no blocking troops.
Blocking troops were not commissars. They were NKVD.

Barrier troops were supposed to round up and arrest deserting troops, which typically were freshly trained greenhorns who were shocked by the ferocity of combat. Some of them may have been executed for desertion, which was fairly common practice in conscript armies of that era. Seasoned Soviet soldiers fought just as well as German soldiers, and sometimes better since they were defending their motherland from rape, genocide, and annihilation.
It's mostly a myth that retreating Soviet soldier were machine gunned down en masse by barrier troops. That is an urban legend that was reinforced by the Hollywood movie Enemy at the Gates.
The Enemy At the Gates scene made no sense. The Russians were up against the Volga River. Retreating troops had nowhere to go. No point in shooting them, just round them up and shove them back at the enemy lines.
Remember Stalingrad was a distraction. The only reason those troops were there was to draw more German troops into Stalingrad. They were not there to win. The winning was being done by the encircling troops.
The choice always seemed to end up fight and die, or surrender and die.
A lot of our stereotypes of Soviet soldiers come from the Nazis themselves. In Nazi racial theory, there was something fundamentally inferior with the East Slavs, who were somehow vaguely Asiatic and barbaric, and well outside the bounds of acceptable European demeanor.
As part of their racial propaganda, the Nazis started the myth that Russians would attack in mindless human waves, and they lacked the fortitude and courage of good Aryan soldiers.
It is amazing the number of Nazi stereotypes that still persist.
Most Soviets fought hard, because they truly did not want to be invaded, and because they realized the Nazis were a threat to their (and their families) lives. For the most part the punishment for deserting was to be put into more dangerous prisoner battalions. Shooting your own soldiers was pointless, especially when the Germans could do it for you. Stalin once said, "It takes a brave man to be a coward in the Soviet Army", and that was true. Not because the Soviets would shoot you, but because you would end up in a more dangerous unit.
In every army in severe warfare, sometimes officers shoot soldiers running from the front.. But that was frowned upon by the Soviet command. It was seen as a waste of resources, and therefore a severe crime.

The remaining resistance- foreign mercenaries, it's said- have been offered a window of surrender- you know, one of those windows that you claim don't exist. It ended at 1pm local time on Sunday. The Geneva Convention says they can surrender any time they want, and that surrendering they get more than just putting off being murdered immediately. Closing a "window" of surrender is a war crime, and offering less than full POW protection is a war crime.
