Kryvyi Rih flood threat after missiles hit water system

The major city of Kryvyi Rih is struggling to contain damage to its water system from Russian missile attacks. The largest city in central Ukraine, with an estimated pre-war population of 650,000, was targeted by eight cruise missiles on Wednesday, officials said.

A report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said footage of the aftermath of the attack showed a 2.5 metre rise in the level of the Inhulets River in Kryvyi Rih.

“The water pumping station was destroyed. The river broke through the dam and overflowed its banks. Residential buildings are just a few meters away from the river,” Ukrainian legislator Inna Sovsun said on Twitter.

The missile strikes hit the Karachunov reservoir dam, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said in a video address released early on Thursday. The water system had no military value and hundreds of thousands of civilians depend on it daily, he said.

The ISW report said the attacks may have been intended to damage Ukrainian pontoon bridges further downstream as part of efforts to disrupt the Kherson counteroffensive, it said.

Who is going to pay to restore Ukraine's infrastructure ?

Who is going to pay to restore Ukraine's infrastructure ?

Certainly not Russia. It is laughable to think Russia could repair anyone's infrastructure, even their own. It is a country with a land connection between China and Europe, with more natural resources than any other country, with an educated population that is simply amazing, and they cannot get their country going. It is pathetic.

The Ukrainians have proven themselves good at improvising. That will go far in rebuilding their country. If this war ever ends, a decade or two from now Ukraine may well be much richer than Russia.

Who did better two decades after WWII: Russia, Japan, or Germany? I doubt anyone would say Russia, who won the war.

I suppose that just being one of the three world superpowers does amount to failure.

That space-station, you know. Terrible wallpaper.

Have you ever been there? The whole system is constantly collapsing. It is the most bizarre country you will ever see.

CHARTS: The Alarming Collapse Of US Infrastructure Spending

The U.S. needs to spend a staggering $2 trillion to rebuild infrastructure, including roads, bridges, water lines, sewage treatment plants and dams reaching the end of their planned life cycles, according to a recent study by the Urban Land Institute.

Russian missiles strike again

Russia hit the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih with cruise missiles again on Thursday, after a devastating strike the day before destroyed a reservoir dam and caused extensive flooding.

The latest attack on the home city of Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, caused serious damage. Two missiles struck the same reservoir hit on Wednesday, which was being repaired, Kryvyi Rih’s military administrator, Oleksandr Vilkul, said. He urged residents to stay in shelters.

It came as Zelenskiy met the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, who was in Kyiv on her third visit since Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Moscow’s recent strikes have cut off essential water and power. Earlier this week Russian warplanes fired long-range missiles into a major electricity station in Kharkiv, plunging the city and much of the surrounding area into darkness.
