Russian spy poisoned by nerve agent just before new bombshell report on Steele dossier

A former Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned with a nerve agent, according to British investigators.

The medical and chemical evidence, as well as the victims’ reactions, point to a poison such as VX or sarin, the two best known nerve agents, reported The Guardian.

The use of a nerve agent suggests a state actor may have been responsible, investigators believe.

Russia has been suspected of targeting former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, although Moscow denies the allegations.

Sources close to British intelligence said toxicology tests would help confirm what agent was used, although they said other factors might also be involved. Skripal was found unconscious on a bench Sunday afternoon, with his 33-year-old daughter Yulia Skripal beside him. Both remain in critical condition in a hospital intensive care unit.

The attack came the day before an in-depth report was published in The New Yorker on former British spy Christopher Steele’s work compiling a dossier linking Donald Trump to Russia....

There has already been some speculation about possible connections. I posted this on another thread yesterday:


Russian defector Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia are in intensive care after being exposed to an unknown substance while sitting on a bench in Salisbury. Police and intelligence agencies are seeking to understand why Colonel Skripal was targeted on Sunday, almost eight years after coming to England in a spy exchange in 2010.

One possible motive is a link between Colonel Skripal and Christopher Steele, the former MI6 agent who compiled a dossier detailing alleged corruption involving President Donald Trump and the Kremlin. Mr Steele ran the MI6 desk in Moscow in the 1990s at a time when Colonel Skripal was being courted, and was in charge of the Russia desk in London from 2006 to 2009.

Professor Anthony Glees, director of the Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies at the University of Buckingham, said: “What we know is that Steele was our man in Russia, that he was extremely good. We know that what MI6 does is gain intelligence from human agents. You put all these things together, it is clear that Sergei Skripal would have been known to Christopher Steele, it cannot be otherwise.

“If it is the case that Christopher Steele produced a dossier on Trump that is authentic and accurate, as we believe it to be – its accuracy has not been seriously undermined - then anybody who feels that Trump was humiliated by an MI6 officer may feel that getting at one of his agents is justified. That could be the Russian security services.”

I don't see a connection to Trump in this particular case. I just saw the story last night on TV and think it's sad. There have been instances in the past years of 'certain' people (usually other Russians) getting killed or maimed with a Russian connection. Not denying that. There's been a couple of 'strange deaths' in the U.S. as well. So, we haven't always had clean hands either.
I still like seeing a workable relationship with Putin as much as we can...not looking for world war here.
