The actual claim is that 27 million Soviets lost their lives during WWII. There were millions of Ukrainians among those Soviet dead.

On a positive note, the speed and ferocity of the advance of the Red Army in 1944 was totally unexpected by the Germans and saved a lot of Jewish lives.

Most of Russia's territory was largely untouched by the invasion. Most of the devastation was in Belarus and Ukraine, and millions of Belarusians, Ukrainians, Kazakhs, Georgians along with Russians died serving in the Red Army or in partisan guerilla forces.
