The nomination of Trump in 2016 was pure irony for three major reasons:

1. While the DNC was deeply financially indebted to Hillary and gave her the nomination, the Republicans ran a free and fair nomination process. Remember how many conservative Republicans blanched at the idea Trump won the nomination?

2. The Republicans were the victims of their own creation: They'd been fanning the flames of radical Evangelistas and national level Tea Party kooks for the entire 8 years of Obama. In 2016 the Monster they'd helped create turned on them. LOL

3. Related to the creation of the Republican monster was the deep distrust of all government and organizations. This, too, backfired on them when their own constituents didn't trust any Republican with whom they disagreed. Usually labeling them RINOs. The Republican party was a victim of its own success in breeding distrust and hate towards any opposition.
