MOSCOW, June 2 (Reuters) - The chief of Russia's state security service said on Wednesday that terrorists were seeking access to nuclear materials across the former Soviet Union, Interfax news agency reported.

Alexander Bortnikov, the chief of the FSB, the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, gave no further details about the attempts or which groups had sought the materials.

"We have information which indicates that terrorists are continuing to attempt to get access to nuclear materials (and) biological and chemical components," he was quoted as saying by Interfax. (Reporting by Guy Faulconbridge, editing by Dmitry Solovyov)

What would we do then if a nuke bomb was blown up on Manhattan?

I wouldn't call the OP "news" exactly; I have no doubt that terrorists are always & will continue to seek nukes and any other form of WMD.

If they blew up Manhattan or anywhere, it would be the worst day in American history.

i think it would destroy our economy and most of the worlds economy not to mention cut off all aid to the outside developing countries resulting in a wave of death 100x larger then what we experience from the bomb. But that being said I wonder what we would do as a country.

Yeah; it's hard to imagine. Do you mean what we would do in response? It would depend entirely on the circumstances. I would hope that we'd go after whoever did it...

i guess in terms of how would the deal with it and then respond. take katrena for example.. zero ability to respond. would martial law be enacted and how far would the zone expand.

Im assuming it would also likely lead to a world-war depending on the severity and the culprits.

I'm sure that I'm going to have a salvo fired over my bow, for this; but I believe that this country would pull together, just as it has in the past.

The day I lose this belief, will be the day that I'll give up entirely.

I doubt any atomic bomb terrorists built could blow up all of Manhatten. The fallout would be pretty severe, though, forcing people our of the area for decades (and after a few decades of wear the area would be pretty much unusable).

If it were terrorists it is unlikely it would lead to any significant world war. It's definitely less sever a scenario than the absolute disaster that would have occurred during a conflict between the US and the USSR.

Yes but im of the belief that we are keeping a lot of hot-spots in check now with our strong military. A weakened USA via losing our financial capital would hasten some other flareups.. enough to consider it a world war.

Certainly, numerous countries throughout the world that hate each other would probably start acting with belligerence toward one another, such as the ME toward Israel, India and Pakistan, Colombia and Venezuela, NK and SK, China and Japan, and China and Russia, and possibly Mexico toward Cent. America.

Good point!
