If Russia does attack Ukraine, be it this weekend or when ever the cost should be great to Russian in lives and material?!! It should not be a cakewalk, when you invade a sovereign country, like when Germany invaded Russia in 1940, it was costly to Germany and the same for France when Napoleon invaded Russia?!! Putin is crazy to think NATO would attack Russia, a nuclear armed country?!! Russia/Soviet could not maintain all those Warsaw Pack countries, it takes a lot of money and men and material to occupy a bunch of countries?!! NATO is the force to make sure Russia does not invade the former Warsaw Pack countries?!!

That is not the NATO mandates...if you want to make it the mandate then you need to go back to the citizens of the NATO countries for approval to change the NATO Charter documents.....that's how this works.

If we offered to keep Ukraine neutral ( like the Budapest Memorandum did) and he accepts in return for standing down and promising not to go in - that would be a huge diplomatic win for the USA/Russia

Just guessing here, but Ukraine favoring the West Europeans over the East Europeans (Russia) may be viewed as a 'Napoleon/Hitler invasion of Russia' in Putin's eyes.
