Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump privately signed a bill on Thursday that allows states to withhold federal money from organizations that provide abortion services, including Planned Parenthood, a group frequently targeted by Republicans.

The bill, which the usually camera-friendly President signed without any media present, reverses an Obama-era regulation that prohibited states from withholding money from facilities that perform abortions, arguing that many of these facilities also provide other family planning and medical services.
The bulk of federal money Planned Parenthood receives, though, goes toward preventive health care, birth control, pregnancy tests and other women's health services. Federal law prohibits taxpayer dollars from funding abortions and Planned Parenthood says 3% of the services it provides are abortions.

The signing comes weeks after Vice President Mike Pence, a social conservative who regularly touts his anti-abortion stances, cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate after two Republicans opposed the measure.
"(Women's) worst fears are now coming true. We are facing the worst political attack on women's health in a generation as lawmakers have spent the past three months trading away women's health and rights at every turn," Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood, said in a statement.

Ivanka Trump's influence

The law once again raises questions about the power Ivanka Trump, the President's daughter and aide, actually wields inside the West Wing. The first daughter met with president of Planned Parenthood shortly after her father was inaugurated in an attempt to better understand the group that is regularly targeted by Republicans. She has also cultivated an image of a moderating force inside the White House.
The President has even said Ivanka Trump would be his guide on women's health issues.
"Ivanka is so much into that whole issue of women's health and women," Trump said in a 2015 interview with Fox News. "And she's my guide on that whole subject."

I have never seen any tangible evidence that Ivanka is some kind of stealth liberal, perhaps very nearly a Bolshevik!

In fact, in my experience some wingnuts try to inflate their street cred for being enlightened, progressive, and forward thinking. In my adventures on the interwebs I have run across quite a few wingnuts, neanderthals, and knuckledraggers who belatedly even try to co-opt the term "liberal" by calling themselves "classical liberals". Sadly, George Dumbya Bush, Dick Cheney, and Sara Palin must have done a buttload of damage to the wingnut name brand!

Actually there are a number of people who classical liberals. Not everyone is a partisan democrat or republican like most on this board. Not everyone is a fan of the free market but that doesn't make those who are wingnuts or Neanderthals. Capitalism has created more wealth and brought more people out of poverty than any other economic system. If the argument is supporting capitalism makes one a wingnut or Neanderthal that says more about the person making the claim than the capitalists. (Not meaning that as a personal attack but in the overall sense)

As for Ivanka I posted an article here last week from The New Yorker about how she was a long time Democrat, and her husband still is one.
 
There's no reason for P.P. to get taxpayer money. We already pay taxes toward the Health Dept. and Medicaid. Every county in the country has one or more. They provide maternity, child & women's health care. They provide referrals for specialties like mammograms. They provide free contraceptives of all kinds for men and women. P.P. is all about abortion referral quotas. Everything else they claim they do is already provided by the State Health Department.
 
Abortion is an elective procedure as much as plastic surgery is, should not be taxpayer funded. Where abortion is medically prudent or reconstructive surgery is needed, let insurance handle it though i'll admit that extreme reconstuctive surgery might not be completely covered cost wise.

EDIT: And the left will be screaming while the vast majority of their foot soldiers will be ignorant of, and refuse to consider when told, that the bill removes the requirement that individual states provide funding for planned parenthood that Obama imposed. Gives more power back to the states where it should be.

Some of these anti-abortionists are just scam artists. IMO there's a difference between being anti-abortion and being a scummy felon. If their position is so righteous they shouldn't have to resort to tricks. And trump's no better than them, he signed this legislation but wouldn't answer a question about whether any of his girlfriends had abortions.

"Two anti-abortion rights activists who covertly recorded themselves discussing fetal tissue with Planned Parenthood staff are facing felony charges in California, for allegedly violating state law by filming people without their permission. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced the charges against David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt on Tuesday, saying the state "will not tolerate the criminal recording of confidential conversations."

In a statement, Daleiden called the charges "bogus" and reiterated claims that Planned Parenthood has violated the law by selling fetal tissue — an allegation that has been investigated by more than a dozen states, none of which found evidence supporting Daleiden's claim."

this is why republicans need Trump. When he goes after someone he goes after them root and branch. The other republicans would never have dared to try and defund this, PBS, and other programs liberals use to house their intelligensia.

I hear lots of ppl that voted for him saying that they didn't vote for ivanka or her husband Rasputin....
