Just four years ago John McCain chose Sarah Palin to be his VP candidate.

Over Mitt Romney.

Why?

Because she was the better candidate!

Mitt Romney's tax returns had nothing to do with Sen. John McCain's decision to choose Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, according to the Arizona Republican, saying he chose the former Alaska governor because she was a "better candidate."

McCain received more than two decades worth of Romney's tax returns as the former Massachusetts governor was undergoing the vetting process four years ago, far more than Romney has released publicly in the 2012 campaign. Democrats have questioned whether McCain saw something untoward in those tax returns and decided to choose Palin instead.

But on Tuesday, McCain flatly rejected that assertion and grew angry at questions over his decision to choose Palin over Romney.

"Of course not," McCain told POLITICO when asked if the contents of Romney's tax returns disqualified him from the selection process. "I don’t know what depths these people won’t reach. Obviously, it’s just outrageous. That’s just outrageous. It shows the – it’s so disgraceful for them to allege something that they have absolutely no knowledge of."

Asked why he chose not to go with Romney, McCain said: "Oh come on, because we thought that Sarah Palin was the better candidate. Why did we not take [Tim] Pawlenty, why did we not take any of the other 10 other people. Why didn’t I? Because we had a better candidate, the same way with all the others. ... Come on, why? That’s a stupid question."

I think Mitt is the best possible candidate for the Republican party this year, and McCain the election prior. Why? Because it gets them out of the way. Everyone with half a functioning brain knew it was going to be a Democrat victory. Just like it's an almost certainty for the incumbent (Obama) to be reelected this year. That's why serious contenders who actually have a shot (Ron Paul not withstanding) have sat on the sideline and are waiting for Obamas 2nd term to be over.

Here we go.

So now come all these news reports (just for example, here, here, here, and here) that Team Romney has decided deliberately -- deliberately -- to trash Sarah Palin by not inviting her to the Tampa convention.

And they expect people to rally to their candidate when they are out there sticking their finger in the eye of the party's base? Sending a message to the Tea Party to go take a flying leap?...

What are these wizards of smart thinking?

Historically, people who are trashed by their own party employ the one entirely fatal weapon they have at their disposal: they stay home in November.

Having a unified convention is Politics 101.

Having -- make that deliberately sponsoring -- a convention inevitably perceived as being run by small people with no agenda except their own routinely yields the same results: defeat.

What should be done? Having had the opportunity to once upon-a-time work on this kind of issue myself, here's the answer.

First, quickly and publicly remedy this by graciously inviting Governor Palin.

Second. As the 2008 nominees, Senator McCain and Governor Palin should have some place and/or role of honor at the convention -- in this case, yes, speaking slots for both.

Third. Make certain that all of the nominee's defeated rivals -- Gingrich, Santorum, Bachmann, Ron Paul, Pawlenty, Perry -- are given some public role at the convention. Have a unity dinner/breakfast/lunch with Governor Romney -- lots of pictures. If there is a running mate selected by then -- include the running mate.

Fourth: Get the platform under control -- consult, consult, consult, consult. And have the votes in subcommittees, full committees and on the floor to get it done.

Last but not least: The night that Governor Romney accepts the nomination, at the conclusion of his speech and his bows with his running mate -- flood the stage with McCain, Palin and all the defeated rivals.

Message: We are not Team Romney -- we are Team America. And yes, Barack Obama, we are as one on the mission to stop you and your "transforming" of America in its tracks.

But for heaven's sakes -- be inclusive.

Get Governor Palin invited now. Post haste.

She was the first woman VP nominee of the Republican Party. She has more than earned simple, basic respect.

Don't add to Governor Romney's problems by making him seem like an ungracious, small man.

He quite decidedly isn't. But the lights are on now -- people are paying attention. He has real enemies out there. He will need all the help he can get not just to win, but to govern.

A Rubio or a Christie would be far better off taking the bet that Romney loses, not getting tarred with the guy's bullshit, and going for the nomination in 2016 when they don't have mitts baggage and don't have to face an incumbent president...and possibly not even an incumbent vp. A pawlenty might as well that bore has no future. Nothing to lose.

But Obama was beatable and in fact mitt might still beat him...but if I was say rubio, at this point I put my bet down on 2016 because Romney has the potential to be a disaster.

I just so strongly disagree with this. The economy does suck. Obama is absolutely beatable. This is a copout for a bad nominee and a terrible bench IMO.

However, I do think that republican up and comers would at this point be fools to want the vp slot. A Rubio or a Christie would be far better off taking the bet that Romney loses, not getting tarred with the guy's bullshit, and going for the nomination in 2016 when they don't have mitts baggage and don't have to face an incumbent president...and possibly not even an incumbent vp. A pawlenty might as well that bore has no future. Nothing to lose.

He has introduced by far the most sensible healthcare plan you have ever had, (needs some tweaking yet) and has gained back the respect that your country lost under the gibbering idiot bush.
It looks to me that 'beat' is the big thing here. Not better policies, not improved living standards, not more sensible foreign policy but simply 'beat'. It really does look as if it might be something else that some americans dont like. Couldn't be his colour, could it?

Hong Kong Chinese don't like mainland Chinese and vice versa, they don't like any foreigners and black foreigners are the most reviled. A lady I knew refused to get into a lift because there was a gentleman fron Ghana (a consultant) in the lift and she thought she would catch AIDS. They treat all non Hong Kongers as second class citizens (although they treat their wallets with the greatest respect). I usually get a double seat on buses and trains because they prefer to sit with their own, I love that. One lovely old lady I am privileged to know told me that when she got on a bus she looked to see if there were any British people, then she would purposely choose the adjacent seat, just to annoy the other travellers! But we are treated well compared with people from Africa, the Indian sub continent and those employed as maids (Philipinas, Indonesians and a few Thais). On the other hand the Chinese are quite pragmatic. They will say, for example: 'I am yellow and you are white.' or 'this is my friend, he is a banana.' (meaning white on the inside and yellow on the outside). There was a violent discussion here a while ago when someone used the term 'Oreo'. So, if you are looking for trouble you can usually find it.
They call us Gwei Lo or ghost person and when I ask why they say they must identify who they are talking to or about. I tell them to use the person's name. Puzzled looks follow.

I'm not rooting for him to lose, quite the opposite. But I am a realist. The economy sucks for far too many. Obama is in trouble. He's definitely beatable. Pretending that Obama was always going to win is an excuse for a bad candidate...a bad candidate who may beat him still. You know who predicted all this from back in 2009? None other than Paul Krugman. Too bad Obama didn't listen less to Rahm and more to Krugman. Obama is very lucky that republicans are such complete fuckps that they insisted on giving him a fighting chance. And I am impressed by his campaign. But it may not be enough.
