Honestly, being Mayor of NYC is a bigger job than being governor of many of the states (WY, RI, etc.), and arguably more prestigious and connected than serving in the US House from many of the districts out there.

Well, off the top of my head, I can name the idiot mayor of NYC, but not the idiot governor of RI. So, I would say that many of us at least care more about what the mayor of NYC thinks than we do the governor of RI.
