A further mass grave containing 57 bodies has been discovered in a suburb outside Kyiv, the latest in a string of massacres reported in areas abandoned by Russian forces. The grave was discovered in Bucha, a town north-west of Kyiv recently retaken by Ukrainian forces. The discovery came after the bodies of another 300 civilians were found in the town.

Vitaliy Klychko, mayor of Kyiv, has described what happened in Bucha and other suburbs of the capital as “genocide”. Images shared by Ukraine’s defense ministry showed bodies strewn on the streets, many with their hands tied behind their backs.

Jack Watling, a senior research fellow at Royal United Services Institute, said it would be wrong to suggest that this was the “result of brutalisation or rogue behaviour”. In fact it was “consistent with Russian methods in Chechnya. This was the plan. It was premeditated.”

The horrifying scenes prompted further international condemnation of the Russian invasion and calls for economic sanctions against Moscow to be ramped up. Britain led international calls for Vladimir Putin and his generals to be brought to justice, while Germany accused the Russian dictator of war crimes for the first time.
