Republicans playing the same card as in 96'

Who else here is old enough to remember when they called Bill Clinton a BIG SPENDER who was going to ruin the economy and the USA?

Who else remembers when the economy is in such jeopardy from Bill Clinton's budget that Newt Gingrich and his cronies thought it was important enough to shut down the government.

who remembers that the economy didn't improve until after Gingrich and his cronies got Clinton to reduce spending......../raises hand......

as to which "card" get's played, I anticipate it will be a repeat of 1980 rather than 1996......

True, Obama started with a sharply downward trajectory and Clinton did not....

But the turn around is a greater accomplishment for Obama than the improvement Clinton caused.

Jarod seems like a nice guy, but he is a partisan hack...and a goofy one at that. If Obama announced tomorrow that he wants to cut spending by $1 trillion, abolish the income tax, and privatize Social Security, Jarod would fully support it because Obama has a "(D)" next to his name. People such as Jarod aren't driven by ideology at all, but rather by partisan politics.

He must be referring to the decrease in the unemployment rate, the increase in lending, the decrease in deficit spending, the elimination of war, the closing of GITMO.... etc...

I was guessing he was referring to the change from GDP contraction to expansion, the change from loss of jobs to gaining jobs, the change from stock market losses to stock market increases, the change from a decline in business investment to growth in business investment and the like. But maybe I'm wrong.

Well if you remember, the Republicans caved, Clinton won his budget... and the Economy grew by leaps and bounds.....

They are trying to same game now with President Obama.... The only difference is that Obama is a Socialist and not from America instead of being a womanizer...

Thats spin seems to be a matter of perspective Jughead.....

The Facts

The government shutdown took place in two phases. The first lasted five days in November 1995, until the White House agreed to congressional demands to balance the budget within seven years. But talks on implementing that agreement failed, and the second shutdown lasted 21 days, from Dec. 15, 1995 to Jan. 6. 1996. (Then a blizzard struck Washington and local federal workers could not get back to work for days after that.)

The sticking point was the GOP demand that Clinton agree to their version of a balanced budget. In months of negotiations, Clinton had actually given a far amount of ground, infuriating Democrats on the left. He agreed to a balanced budget over seven years, to tax cuts, to changes in mandatory spending programs such as Medicare. But the two sides were remained far apart on the pace of spending cuts -- and even further apart on the policies behind those cuts.

Clinton won his budget ?.....The Republicans caved ????
...............??????? I don't think thats quite accurate, Jughead....

So Clinton agreed to a balanced budget...............a Republican demand....
To tax cuts.............................................................a Republican demand....
To
changes in mandatory spending programs......a Republican demand....

But.....Republicans eventually cut a deal with Clinton that was not much different than what they could have gotten before the shutdown.

So it was a matter of give and take in the end....won some, lose some....hardly a one sided win by either side to be fair......its just a matter of who is spinning the story.....

I'm old enough to remember 1980, and Carter dealing with his failures.
