Republicans Make Jaw-Dropping $1B Demand for Trump’s Ballroom

The president has insisted his vanity project would be funded by wealthy donors.
Senate Republicans are seeking $1 billion of taxpayer money to help fund “security adjustments and upgrades” linked to Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project.

The proposal was outlined in a reconciliation package focusing on federal law enforcement and border security spending, which was released by Sen....

✅ What the evidence actually shows

1. The ballroom was never described as “free.”

The closest claim to “free” came from Trump saying it would be funded by himself and private donors, not taxpayers. But even that was not fully confirmed, and the White House never stated Trump alone would cover the entire cost.

  • FactCheck.org reports that Trump said he and “other patriot donors” would pay for the ballroom, estimated at $300 million, with $200 million pledged so far. The White House did not specify how much Trump personally would contribute.
This means the project was privately funded, not “free.”

2. Some Republicans pushed for taxpayer funding anyway.

NBC News reports that several Republican senators introduced legislation to provide $400 million in taxpayer funds for the ballroom after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner attack. Others opposed using public money and preferred private funding.

This directly contradicts the idea that the ballroom was “free.”

3. Trump publicly stated it was a “private thing,” but that still means paid by donors — not free.

Snopes confirms Trump said the ballroom would be funded by himself and private donations, estimated at $200 million at the time.

Again: privately funded ≠ free.

🎯 Bias Check

The claim “it was going to be free” is:

  • Factually incorrect — no source supports it.
  • A distortion of Trump’s statements about private funding.
  • Often used rhetorically to imply taxpayers would not be involved, even though:
    • The White House never confirmed Trump’s personal contribution amount.
    • Congress considered taxpayer funding anyway.

  • Transparent about sourcing
There is no partisan framing in the factual record showing the ballroom was ever “free.”

📌 Final Verdict

The ballroom was never free. It was a hundreds‑of‑millions‑of‑dollars project funded by:

  • Trump (amount unknown)
  • Private donors
  • And at one point, proposed taxpayer funding
No credible source supports the claim that the ballroom would cost nothing.

lol. Leftist AI even knows that it wasn't being paid for with tax dollars, until they got someone to sue to stop it...

It was going to be free, but y'all didn't want that. So. Now here we are.

I absolutely did not think it should be free and still do not but that is not the point you think it is.

I think it should have went thru the Congressional process, all other such other large transformational processes are specifically required to do by the Congressional laws enacted in the last few decades and if the Executive could get Congress to fund it after the assessments then that is the proper way.

What that DOES NOT MEAN, is that if i disagree with Trump doing it by King like fiat, and ignoring the law and Congress, that i then want the Executive to demand Congress just pay for it at a price greatly inflated from the initial $200M max Trump said it would cost. If Trump submits it to the full lawful process Congress laid out, and it is approved and funded that way i will support it, even with this magat controlled Congress. If they have the votes they get their way.

But also lets not forget Trump is trying to have the FED Chair investigated for fraud for cost over runs on the 100 year old Fed building upgrades. Well now the cost over runs on the Ballroom are 500%.

You got that right 5x or 500% increase over the initial budget ($200M to 1B) as soon as we suddenly have tax payer dollars paying the bill, so we should also have the DoJ investigate Trump related fraud on this and ensure he is not shoveling tax payer money to friendlies.

It was never going to be free to raxpayers. Trump lies. He wants it badly enough that he bypassed all procedures concerning govt buildings and historical renovations. He has something devious planned.

Wait a minute, Republicans are seeking big bucks for Trump’s fantasy project because Democrats didn’t want a project tney never approved of to be free?

Love to hear an explanation of that one
@Damocles is trying to make the point that because Trump was defying the law and building a ballroom breaking every rule but he said 'don't worry, my donors buying favors will pay for it' making it even worse...

That because Dems objected to that then Trump now gets to say 'fine... i will raise the cost 500% from the initial budget and make taxpayers pay for it'.

Damo is pushing the idea that this was the natural deserved consequence of the Dems pushing to have the law and rules followed.

Of course that is stupid, but should we expect anything else from him?

"The White House did not specify how much Trump personally would contribute." That translates to he's contributing zilch.

AI response. You obviously can't do better.

I love that in an era when Americans face anemic job markets and surging inflation, Republicans are passionately fighting to spend taxpayer money on an ostentatious grand royal ballroom.
