Republican National Convention staffers scrambling to remove Jim Crow-like ‘white elevators’ signs


At best, it’s an Oscar-level performance in tone-deafness.

Republican National Convention staffers are scrambling to remove signs labeling a bank of elevators as “white elevators,” the Wall Street Journal’s Byron Tau reports.

Tau is in Cleveland, along with many reporters, gearing up for the Convention. The signs, meanwhile, are being frantically replaced.

“I’m told it’s being replaced for obvious reasons,” Tau tweeted.

According to the New York Daily News, the signs were spotted in Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena. It’s unclear how or why the signs were posted.

The discovery comes amid controversy swirling around the GOP’s presumptive nominee, Donald Trump, who has espoused what critics have called racist views. Trump has won the support of white supremacists with his rhetoric against immigrants from Mexico, Muslim and Jewish people.

His political rallies have also been racially-charged spectacles where black demonstrators were roughed up, threatened or beaten by white Trump supporters.

The Daily News likens the signs to Jim Crow-era notices informing Black Americans they could not use the same facilities as white people due to segregation laws

Once again, you post a story as fact when you have zero facts to back up your claim. Where is the proof republicans put up the signs?

The ONLY proof you have offered is that republicans are REMOVING the signs.

It's likely the signs were simply part of a coding system set up to assist convention attendees and workers in getting to particular locations within the venue; but given the charges of racism that have frequently been leveled against presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump, the sight of Jim Crow-like signage in the RNC venue (even if innocuously intended) is a publicity hit Republicans would prefer to avoid.

It’s still unclear who approved the signs or why they were hung in the first place (or even if there was more than one such sign); but if someone should come forward with additional photographs of "Red Elevators" and "Blue Elevators" signs at Quicken Loans Arena, that would pretty much settle the issue in favor of "White Elevators" simply being part of an otherwise unremarkable color-coding location scheme.

trump obviously ordered this because he needed to tell the blacks he owns (his african americans) where to go. They would be of course sold to their new masters on the first day of the republican convention.

I've realized Zappa has no shame. He can post a thread lying about something being "right wing TERRORISM" and then never admit he lied. If anyone posts about unfair mod treatment, he claims they are butt hurt. But he can make numerous threads about unfair mod treatment and that is perfectly acceptable. He will decry petty insults or attacks and then make them himself and that is perfectly acceptable.

it must be hard to be an event planner. You obviously cant use white or black zones. Include brown zones for that too. Yellow is of course orientals. pink is for gays. Red might be offensive to the american indians, we cant insult the people of elizabeth warren :D

Its like if your planning an event all you can use is blue and green and are limited to 2 organizational zones.
