In a way I am very glad this guy who took taxpayer money to visit his girlfriend in Rio, after telling the people he would be hiking the AT.

It likely makes it impossible to attack President Clinton ever again on his one huge mistake.

How is that? If you are in the district that elected Sanford and you voted for Sanford and you complain about Clinton then yes you would be a hypocrite. Because someone in a South Carolina district voted for Sanford does not mean I cannot theoretically complain about Bill Clinton because I live in California.

Good point, unless you are posting here about how happy you are about the outcome.

In a different tangent, I like that he won because I enjoy a redemption story... even if I disagree with the guy politically. I think its good for everyone to be reminded that nobody is perfect and just because you have a failing does not make you necessarily unfit.
 
I just saw that the guy voted to impeach President Clinton... so I hope he learned a lesson in humility.

I'm a Republican, I'm a party hack. I'm glad a Republican won the seat. I'm not glad that Republican was Sanford. He should have lost in the primaries.

The lesson that he learned is that he should be empathetic to people exactly like him, but that's about it. I shit you not:

What's the confession? I've always admitted I'm a hack. I'd rather not be but I am. Doesn't mean I haven't voted for non-Republicans because I have. I often don't like what the Republicans do and stand for but I'm a party hack nonetheless. It's just easier to state the truth.

I know this is where many Republicans and Democrats differ. I'm all for supporting those in need with our tax dollars, especially those who can't care for themselves. I do not want to see starving people dying on the streets of our country. At the same I time I think there are people who have done well enough for themselves that feel they are being more compassionate and caring (and makes themselves feel better) if they vote to give more government aid to lower income people. To me, at a certain point you are doing more harm for the people you are purporting to help than good. We could obviously delve far deeper into this in way more detail but Dungheap related empathy with public assistance programs and I don't see it that way.

I'm not looking for a policy debate here. I just think it's pretty fucked up that Sanford's new found empathy for others extend to people exactly like him and no further. Not to people that make mistakes in life and have to deal with the consequences of their poor decision making generally, but only to public figures suffering from embarassment and public humilitation.

It's kinda twisted if you ask me.
